For example, according to research by UNISON, young people are doing jobs similar to adult workers, but for much lower wages. The National Minimum Wage, introduced by the government in 1999, does not cover workers under the age of 18, and provides a lower rate for workers aged 18 to 21. UNISON has long argued that young workers should be covered by the full rate of National Minimum Wage. | ||||||||||||||

Where young people are part of
a workforce represented by a trade union they get a better deal, including
improved pay and career opportunities, and are less at risk from
exploitation, accidents and injury compared to young workers in non-unionised
workplaces. That's why our priority is to recruit and support more young
