A message from the General Secretary

Government ministers must stop knocking the NHS and its staff. It’s time they stood up for the NHS and the workforce and allowed the 10-year plan to do its work.

The so-called "reforms" which batter staff and the service are nothing more than failed Tory policies, which should be dropped. When Labour came back to power it ended the market in the NHS – now its going further than the Tories did. Getting so-called entrepreneurs in to run the service is old and failed. And the next gimmick is Foundation hospitals, which won’t improve thes ervice.

The way forward is investment in staff, not cheap gimmicks, through Agenda for Change which is supposed to unite rather than divide, and to provide the right salary structures to make people feel valued and rewarded.

No Racism: No Them and Us

The TUC has agreed to jointly organise with UNISON, the anti racism events planned for 26 April in Manchester.

The march will assemble at the Castlefield Basin between 10.30 and 11.30am. The Castlefield Basin is on Liverpool Rd, Manchester opposite the Museum of Science and Industry. Deansgate station is a five-minute walk away. The march will move off from Castlefield at 11.30 am towards Albert Square, where there will be a rally with entertainment.

More information regarding the march and rally, will be available on

by phoning 0845 355 0845.

Leaflets and posters will be available to order via the above website and number from Wednesday 12 March.

In addition there will be a concert in the evening at the Manchester Apollo. Further information about the line up and ticket availability will be available via the above web site and phone number.

Profiting from PFI

A new UNISON report "Profiting from PFI" shows that there is so much money to be made from PFI that building companies have completely restructured in order to enjoy PFI profits and exploit staff. Many have abandoned the traditional role of construction - in the knowledge that as service providers PFI will give them a secure income for the next 30 years

Sustainable Energy Bill

UNISON is supporting a Private Member's 'Sustainable Energy Bill', promoted by Brian White, Labour MP for Milton Keynes North East. The Bill calls for the practical application of low carbon technologies, which assist the Government to achieve the policy objectives in the Energy White Paper, published on 24th February 2003. We are asking UNISON-linked MPs to support an Early Day Motion titled 'The Energy White Paper and the Sustainable Energy Bill' and to be present for the Bill's Second Reading in the House of Commons on Friday 28th March.

Branches are asked to write to their MP urging her/him to sign the Early Day Motion and to attend the Second Reading on 28th March.

The 2003 Bob Cotton Citizenship Awards - REMINDER!

Branches are reminded that there is only a month until the deadline for the annual Bob Cotton Citizenship Award - 7 April 2003. Leaflets and posters advertising the award were sent out in a previous mailing.

As you may know, the award was created to commemorate Bob Cotton, a member of UNISON's NEC, who was killed in the Ladbroke Grove rail crash on 5 October 1999. Bob was an extremely active member of his community - as a trade unionist, councillor, school governor, and active Labour Party member. It is only fitting that any prize in his name should go to other, generous individuals who have made a meaningful contribution to their community.

Anyone can make nominations, and anyone can be nominated. This award is not restricted to UNISON members. Individuals or teams can be nominated.

The winner receives £5,000 to be donated to the charity or organisation of their choice, plus an actual award for the winner to keep. The presentation takes place at UNISON's annual conference in Brighton and will include a short video about the winner.

Last year the prize was shared between Nicky Lee, a UNISON member working in South Africa, and Gerlinde Rambausek, the voluntary chair of Crouch Hill Community Centre Trust. Further details about them can be found in the application leaflet.

The deadline for nominations is 7 April 2003.

You can make nominations via the web, at: www.bobcottonaward.org.uk

Further copies of application forms can be obtained by ringing UNISONdirect on 0845 355 0845. Further copies of forms or posters can be also be obtained from Nikki O'Reilly (details below).
