A message from the General Secretary

UNISON has responded with a strong show of support for the firefighters following John Prescott’s attack on the service demanding that the Deputy Prime Minister withdraw his threat to take over the fire service.

The Government and the Deputy Prime Minister must stop raising the temperature of the dispute.

It is the government's responsibility to create a climate in which the two sides can get together and thrash out a settlement.

All this carping from the sidelines, interference and now making threats won't end the dispute but will only help to prolong it.

The union says modernisation of the fire service should not be at the expense of public safety and should not mean fewer fire fighters, fewer fire stations and fewer fire engines.

At the start of the firefighters’ dispute the union’s executive issued a statement condemning those within the government who see the dispute as a way of taking on public sector trade unions.

Confrontation with public-sector workers cannot be the way forward for a Labour government. It will not lead to the improvements in our public services which we all seek.

UNISON wants Big Four Accountancy Firms held to account

A new report from UNISON entitled "Stitched up: How the Big Four accountancy firms have PFI under their thumbs" calls for an enquiry into the way that the Big Four accountancy firms have ‘stitched up’ the Private Finance Initiative.

The hard-hitting report reveals the revolving door between the Big Four and government. Ministers, ex ministers, MPs, civil servants - have all been in the pay of these firms who, in turn, provide secondees to government and sit on various working groups. The Big Four devise, develop and profit from PFI policies.

The report exposes the conflicting roles that the Big Four accountancy firms have in PFI. Not only do they devise and develop government policy, act as advisors to public authorities helping to select contractors but they also advise the bidders and even tender for and win contracts in their own right.

While public sector workers find their jobs, working conditions and pension rights put at risk by PFI and PPP contracts, it is those same accountancy firms, investment banks, facilities management companies and property developers who are getting even richer.

UNISON calls for an enquiry to establish the full extent of the problem and to produce remedies that will meet the grave concerns raised in this report and will put public policy beyond the reach of vested interests.

Violence at Work - New Guidance

Work-related violence is a widespread problem across all sectors and is a major occupational hazard for many UNISON members. It is the most life threatening risk that members can face and the most likely to lead to injury. Violence includes verbal abuse and threats, which may have long term health effects.

Many employers are not doing enough to tackle this life-threatening hazard. UNISON wants employers to work in partnership with safety representatives and stewards to reduce the risk of violence, and has revised its guidance to help with negotiations. Violence at Work a guide to risk prevention (stock number 1346) is available from the Communications Department, 1 Mabledon Place, London WC1H 9AJ.

Information on the risk of violence and other health and safety concerns is available on the UNISON web site at www.unison.org.uk
