STUDENTS MAKE THE EARLY PACE

The Aberdeen Badminton Leagues are now underway following the October holiday break and Aberdeen University are setting the early pace. The students have three teams in the Leagues and all of them are undefeated following their opening matches.

In Division Two of the Mixed League, University demolished Grampian Police 9-0 and also defeated league newcomers Deveron Badminton Club, from Banff by 7 rubbers to 2. In the Gents Division Three League, University B beat 71 Club 8-1 and followed that up with a 9-0 win against Bridge of Don. Not to be outdone their A team had a 5-4 away win over promotion favourites Racquets in Division Two of the Gents League. In the same Division, Racquets had started the season well with a 9-0 win at Westhill. The Aberdeenshire team had better luck against Grampian Police, winning 7-2.

In Division One of the Mixed League Racquets were in action twice, firstly losing 5-4 at home to Westhill and then redeeming themselves with a 6-3 away win against Portlethen. Gordonians find themselves in an unusual position after one match played in Division One of the Gents League. Despite winning 6-3 against Summerhill, CAS lie above them in the league courtesy of a 7-2 win over Portlethen. Summerhill were in action again, playing Central Buchan and this time going down by the narrowest of margins 5-4.

CHAMPIONS OFF THE MARK

Last season's Division One Mixed champions, Fetteresso, got off the mark with a convincing 8-1 away win over Central Buchan. Fielding an almost full strength team Fetteresso led by Colin Ross and Pam Cowell are looking a good bet to retain the title that they have held for the past two seasons. Racquets on the other hand may not agree with that prognosis. They also won away against Central Buchan, running out 6-3 winners. All Racquets couples played their parts winning two rubbers each, including the evergreen pairing of Dave Plank and Margaret Sked. This takes them to the top of the League in that Division.

In the same Division Portlethen recorded their first victory of the season with a 7-2 away win against Westhill. Craig Stewart and Carolyn Ripley won 3 times for Portlethen. In Division Two of the Gents League a youth policy is beginning to pay dividends for Westhill. For the second match running the Aberdeenshire club has played with half a team under 18 years of age. Both matches were won by Westhill, the most recent at Beacon where they recorded an 8-1 victory. The match, however, was much closer than the score suggests. Six of the rubbers went to three sets, with Beacon winning 8 games in all. Atholl Low and Mike Crusoe took the sole rubber for the home team.

Fixtures scheduled for next week are as follows:

Sunday 17 Nov
Gordonians Vs CAS (Mens Div1)

BUCHAN ON TOP

CAS's stay at the top of Division One of the Gents League was shortlived. In their match against last year's champions Gordonians, they went down by 7 rubbers to 2. Gordonians moved back into top spot, though only for a day as Central Buchan playing the next evening comprehensively beat Portlethen by 9 rubbers to 0 at Mintlaw. The Buchan Boys now lie top by virtue of their superior rubbers. Both teams, however have yet to tackle Fetteresso to keep their challenge on course. Fetteresso, who have had hall problems will have to play some matches soon, if they are not to be faced with a backlog in the run up to Christmas.

In Division Two of the Gents League, Aberdeen University kept up the students 100% record in all their teams matches with a 7-2 away win over Grampian Police. Chi Goh and Brian Li won three times for the Varsity. Westhill were again in action, but this time their young team went down 7-2 at home to Fetteresso B. Ross Watson and R Christie won 3 times for the Stonehaven team. Ross will be on Westhill's side however, on Monday, when their mixed team faces Central Buchan at Mintlaw in Division One.

Aberdeen University made it three wins out of three in Division Two of the Mixed League. They won 8-1 at the Beacon, with Derek Phillips nd Claire Johnson taking the sole rubber for the home team. In the same Division, newcomers Deveron from Banff recorded their first win in the Aberdeen Leagues, courtesy of a 9-0 walkover against Grampian Police.

BADMINTON ARTICLE FOR EVENING EXPRESS: 7 DECEMBER 2002

FETTERESSO DIG IN AT THE TOP

Fetteresso showed their class in defeating Mixed Division One newcomers, Westhill 9-0, in a match played at Banchory, an interesting home venue for a Stonehaven team. Fetteresso then went on to beat Racquets by the same margin of 9 rubbers to 0. This takes last season's champions to the top of the League with three wins out of three. Racquets hold onto second spot on four points. Westhill have not had a good run recently, they were in action again twice. Playing away to Central Buchan they fought hard but eventually went down by 5 rubbers to 4 in a match where no couple was able to win all three rubbers. Two days later fielding a weakened team and with Keith Walker nursing a swollen ankle they fell at home to CAS 7-2. They have now completed all their fixtures for the first half of the season, while CAS have 4 matches to fit in before Christmas, if possible.

Banchory were in action for the first time in the Mixed League Division Two and stated their promotion intentions with a 9-0 away victory over Grampian Police. Gordonians consolidated their position at the top of Division One of the Gents League with a 7-2 win against Central Buchan. Their vanquished opponents still remain their nearest challengers in the League, though Fetteresso look a good bet to mount a serious challenge in the Gents Division One this season. They had a comfortable 7-2 away victory over CAS with Colin Ross and Paul Wilson winning three times for the Stonehaven club. They need to clear their fixture backlog, however, if this challenge is to materialise.

In Division Two of the Gents League Fetteresso B are making a promotion push with their second victory in a row, this time an 8-1 away win against Beacon. Dave Stewart and Atholl Low took the sole rubber for the losers. Fetteresso now lie on the same points total as Westhill and Aberdeen University, but have played two matches less than the former club, who they defeated last week.

A University team tasted defeat for the first time last week. Their Gents B team went down by the narrowest of margins (5-4) to a Banchory team playing their first match of the season in Division Three of the Gents League. This despite Peter MacPherson and Ross MacJannette winning three times for the students. The match included 5 rubbers going to 3 sets. Also in the same Division, Bridge of Don won the battle at the bottom of the League winning 7-2 at home against 71 Club. Ian Jamieson and Lindsay Kessack won two rubbers to keep the score respectable for the visitors.

At last the Ladies League has got off the mark! In Division One Fetteresso Ladies had a comprehensive 4-0 away win over Portlethen. Cults CC Badminton will be withdrawing their gents team from Division 3 of the Gents League due to their difficulty in getting sufficient players to field a full team. All fixtures they were involved in will be treated as null and void.

Fixtures scheduled for next week are as follows:

Tuesday 10 Dec
Portlethen Vs Central Buchan (Mix Div 1)
Grampian Police Vs Beacon (Mix Div 2)

Friday 13 Dec
Banchory Vs University (Mix Div 2)
CAS Vs Racquets (Mix Div 1)

CHRISTMAS BONUS FOR BANCHORY

Banchory Gents team in Division Three of the Aberdeen Leagues look like being top dogs for Christmas. They recorded two 9-0 victories over Bridge of Don and 71 Club respectively. This puts them two points clear at the top of the Division with University B, their closest challengers.

Summerhill Badminton Club have been very busy over the past couple of weeks. Their gents Division One team were action in three times. Playing against Fetteresso they were unlucky to go down at home by 5 rubbers to 4. In their next match against Portlethen, who fielded two of their juniors (Stuart Docherty and Kieran Hendry), the hard work they had put during the first half of the season paid off with a 6-3 home win. They then followed that with a 5-4 away victory against a CAS team containing Steve Thomson and Graham Shand. Summerhill now lie second to Gordonians in the Division.

In Division Two of the Gents League, Racquets were in action twice. They firstly defeated a Beacon team yet to record a victory by 6 rubbers to 3. They followed that by disposing of Fetteresso B by 8 rubbers to 1 at Stonehaven. Ross Watson and Andy Hinchcliffe won the sole rubber for the losers. Racquets now move ahead of University in the Division curtesy of a superior rubbers advantage. University have a match in hand however.

Fetteresso ladies consolidated their position at the top of Division One of the Ladies League, with a convincing 4-0 win over Banchory.

STUDENT POWER REIGNS SUPREME

Aberdeen University closed off the first half of the season in Division Two of the Gents League in fine style. The students bolstered by the inclusion this season of Chee Goh in their team, powered to two victories in the space of two days. First to feel their power were Westhill. The Varsity lads cruised to a 9-0 away victory, in a fixture that was rearranged from the previous week. University then tackled Fetteresso B at the Butchart Sports Centre and this time dropped one rubber in their 8-1 win. The sole rubber for the Stonehaven team was taken by Fetteresso stalwarts Ross Watson and Andy Hinchcliffe. This sees University lead the Division Two table at the halfway stage with 5 wins out of 5. Fetteresso B had better luck in their match against Grampian Police winning 7-2. The Force lie at the bottom of the league with no points, though they do have two matches still to play.

Fetteresso's Division One Mixed team continue to dominate that division. They defeated Portlethen 9-0 to make it 4 wins out of 4 and currently lead their nearest challengers, Racquets by 4 points. They are now clear favourites to win the premier mixed title for the third season on the trot. Deveron recorded their second victory in Division Two of the Mixed League. Unfortunately it was again a 9-0 walkover, this time against Banchory. It is disappointing that teams from the Aberdeen area are unwilling or unable to raise teams to travel to Banff.

Registration forms have now been sent out to teams for entering this season's Activ-8 Junior Crombie Badminton League. The competition which is for children of secondary school age (1st to 5th year inclusive) is to be played on four Sundays in the first quarter of 2003. The agreed dates are the 19 January, 9 February, 23 and 30 March 2003. The venue is the Aberdeen Beach Leisure Centre. Completed registration forms should be sent to Joan Prieur with the entry fee of 40 per team of 4 players, by 10 January 2003. Further details can be found on the League's Website at www.aberdeenbadminton.co.uk

FETTERESSO LEAD THE WAY OVER RIVALS

The first half of the Aberdeen and District Badminton Leagues 2002-2003 programme has just finished and Fetteresso lead three out of the four divisions they have teams competing in. The Stonehaven Club finished their programme in Division One of the Mixed League with their 4th, 9-0 win, this time away to CAS. The result, however was much closer than the 9-0 scoreline suggests. The match included 5 rubbers that went to three sets. Fetteresso have now won 5 matches out of 5 and sit 6 points clear at the top of the Division.

In Division One of the Gents League, Fetteresso again won 9-0, this time away to Central Buchan. Sandy Howie and Graham Willox for the home side took all their opponents to 3 sets but were unable to clinch a consolation rubber. Fetteresso now sit on top of the Division courtesy of a superior rubbers diiference over Gordonians who they still have to play.

Fetteresso continue to lead Division One of the Ladies League on 4 points but have still to play CAS, who won their first match 4-0 away to Banchory.

Leaders of the other Divisions at the halfway stage are Aberdeen University in Divsion Two of the Mixed and Gents Leagues and Banchory in Division Three of the Gents League. No matches have yet been played in Division Two of the Ladies League, which only contains three teams.

RELEGATION DOGIGHT

A relegation dogfight is currently taking place in Division One of the Mixed League. Portlethen pulled themselves clear of the drop zone with a 7-2 home victory over Westhill. Craig Stewart and Carolyn Ripley won three times for the home side. Racquets also did themselves a favour with a 6-3 home victory over Central Buchan, A Forrest and N Bruce were the anchor couple for the victors. Central Buchan now meet Westhill this Wednesday in a match that should go, along way to determining who remains in the top flight next season. CAS may also still figure in the dogfight as they have a large backlog of fixtures to clear before the end of the season.

In Division Two of the Mixed League Banchory pressed their case to be considered worthy of a place in the top flight next season. They recorded their fourth victory of the season winning 5-4 away to Cults Community Centre. Their concession to Deveron earlier in the season may yet count against them however.

Fetteresso B and Racquets kept up the pressure on Aberdeen University in Division Two of the Gents League. Fetteresso B won 6-3 against Westhill and Racquets won by the same margin against a Beacon team rejuvenated by the acquisition of former Garioch stalwart Alan Keith. Fetteresso B and Racquets now lie on the same points total as University, though the students have matches in hand.

Banchory stretched their lead in Division Three of the Gents League with a hard fought 5-4 away against Bridge of Don. Jim Beaton and Andrew Wride won all three of their rubbers for the victors.

The North East Junior Restricted Badminton Tournament got underway today at Kincorth Academy and will continue tomorrow also taking in Hazlehead Academy as a venue.

CAS END FETTERESSO RUN

CAS have ended Fetteresso's unbeaten run in Division One of the Aberdeen and District Gents League. They edged out the Stonehaven team by 5 rubbers to 4, with Robbie Dunbar-Smith and Dave Brown, top dogs in winning all three of their rubbers. Fetteresso then received more bad news when Gordonians won 6-3 away to Central Buchan. This lifts Gordonians 2 points clear of Fetteresso at the top of the Division.

The temprature is fast approaching boiling point in Division Two of the Gents League. Racquets advanced their challenge with a 7-2 home victory over Westhill. University however maintained pole position with a 9-0 home win over Grampian Police and followed that with a much closer 5-4 away win against Beacon. They currently lie two points ahead of Racquets, with the two teams to meet in their final match of the season. At the bottom of the league Beacon won their first match of the season winning 5-4 against fellow relegation contenders, Grampian Police.

There has been considerable activity in Division Two of the Mixed League. The two pace setters in the Division, Aberdeen University and Banchory were both in action and each recorded 9-0 walkovers. University against Cults CC and Banchory against Deveron. Cults CC also played Grampian Police who they defeated 9-0. The Force had no better luck in their home match against Beacon when they again lost 9-0. Beacon made it two out of two with a battling 5-4 away win over Deveron. Alan Keith and Claire Johnston won 3 times for Beacon.

North East Badminton players featured prominently in the Bank of Scotland Under 13, 17 and 21 Scottish championships. Calum Menzies from Peterhead had triple success in the Under 17 section of the championships. He retained his singles title defeating Watson Briggs from Renfrew 15-5, 15-6 in the final. He then paired up with Watson to win the Gents Doubles title defeating S O'Farrell and A Simpson 15-13, 10-15, 15-8 in the final. FETTERESSO BOUNCE BACK TO TOP

Fetteresso's absence from the top of Division One of the Gents League proved to be short lived. The Stonehaven Club bounced back with an 8-1 win over Portlethen and this takes them above Gordonians, by virtue of their superior rubbers. The title race is still very open, however, as there are still a number of matches to play in this division before the end of the season.

In Division Two of the Gents League, promotion and relegation issues are now becoming much clearer. University's 9-0 win over Westhill virtually assures them of the title with only one match to play. At the other end of the division Beacon's victory over Grampian Police, by 6 rubbers to 3, anchors the "force" at the bottom of the league with no points to date.

History was made in Division Three of the Gents League when 71 Club recorded their first victory for two seasons. It was a tight affair, but 71 Club who moved to Kingswells at the beginning of this season, edged out Bridge of Don 5-4, with Ian Jamieson and Lindsay Kessack winning three times for the victors.

CAS eased their relegation worries in Division One of the Mixed League with a 6-3 victory against Racquets and a 9-0 home win over Westhill. Central Buchan increased the pressure on Westhill at the bottom of the League when they beat Portlethen by 5 rubbers to 4. They have games in hand over Westhill and the uncompleted match between these two clubs is now a must for Westhill to win if they are to contemplate remaining in the top flight next season.

Division One of the ladies league is a straight fight between CAS and Fetteresso who both lie on 6 points with the same rubbers difference. CAS recorded two victories, a 4-0 win against Portlethen and a 4-0 walk over against Banchory. Fetteresso meanwhile also won 4-0 against Banchory.

League Fixtures scheduled for next week are as follows:

Monday 17 March
Racquets Vs Beacon (Gents Div 2)

Friday 21 March
Banchory Vs 71 Club (Gents Div 3)

Saturday 22 March
Fetteresso Vs CAS (Ladies Div 1)

SUMMERHILL KEEP PRESSURE ON AT TOP AFTER IMPRESSIVE WINS

Summerhill with two wins out of two are making a genuine bid to challenge Fetteresso and Gordonians for the Division One title in the Gents League. In the space of three days they had victories over relegation favourites, Portlethen 6-3 and Central Buchan by the same margin. The backbone of their team, couples Ian Robb and Ken Watson and Doug Buchan and Mark Beattie were undefeated in the two matches.

In Division Three of the Gents League University B are looking favourites to win the title. They recorded a 5-4 home victory over closest challengers Banchory and then followed that with an 8-1 defeat of 71 Club.

Fetteresso continue to maintain there big lead at the top of Division One of the Mixed League. Recording a 6 rubbers to 3 away win against Westhill they have won seven matches out of seven, with three matches remaining. In the same Division, Racquets pressed their case to finish runners-up with a hard fought 5-4 win over CAS. Colin Anderson and Nicola Bruce won three times for the victors.

Aberdeen University are close to clinching the Division Two Mixed title. They beat bottom club, Grampian Police 7-2 and then went on to demolish their closest challengers, Banchory by 9 rubbers to 0. In the same Division, Deveron claimed a 9-0 walkover against a Cults CC team unable to field a team.

Sunday sees the final session of the Activ-9 Junior Crombie League being played at the Beach Leisure Centre, starting at 9.30am. The competition for the Division One title is between Cults Academy 1, Mackie Boys and former winners Banff Academy 1. Current leaders in Pool A of Division Two are Meadows Badminton Club and Mackie Academy 2, whilst Hazlehead Academy lead Pool B. The winners of each pool require to play off for the Division Two title.

MACKIE ARE A SMASH HIT

Mackie Boys and League newcomers, Hazlehead Academy, both toasted their success in this season's Activ-8 Junior Crombie Badminton League. At the final session of the League played at the Beach Leisure Centre last Sunday, Mackie Boys from Stonehaven clinched the Division One title. Their team consisting of Kyle Duncan, Peter Johnston, Chris McCauley and David Bradley defeated former winners Banff Academy One, 5-1 and also defeated Cults Academy One by the same margin. Banff had a 5-1 victory over Cults to finish as runners-up.

The play-off for fourth place was won by Kemnay Church, who defeated Mackie Academy One by 4-2 and drew 3-3 with Banchory Academy One. The play-off for seventh place was secured by Robert Gordons with two 5-1 wins over Westhill Academy and Cults Academy Two, respectively.

In Division Two, the final pool games were played first with the result that Pool A was topped by Meadows Badminton Club with a 100% record. Mackie Academy Two were runners-up in the pool. In Pool B, Hazlehead Academy won all their matches to finish first with Banff Academy Two the runners-up. In the play off for the Division Two title, the Hazlehead team of Jamie Colvin, Kris Stuart, Alistair Nicol and Paul McKenzie defeated Meadows Badminton Club 5-1.

In Division One of the Aberdeen and District Gents Badminton League, Gordonians pushed their nose in front again in a title fight that looks likely to go right down to the wire. They defeated Portlethen by 7 rubbers to 2, to move two points clear of Fetteresso. In Division Three of the Gents League, Banchory's 9-0 win over 71 Club gave them this season's first title by the narrowest of margins. They finished on the same points as Aberdeen University B, but secured the title by a superior rubbers difference of only one.

Racquets moved into second place in Division One of the Mixed League with a 7-2 home victory against Portlethen. Brian Ewing and Nicola Bruce won three times for Racquets. In Division Two of the Mixed League, Beacon continued their good form of late with a 7-2 home win over Cults Community Centre. In Division One of the Ladies League Portlethen recorded a 4-0 walkover against Banchory. Grampian Police finished their season with a 5-4 away win against Westhill in Division Two of the Gents League, but this was not enough to stop the force finishing bottom of the Division.

A photograph of the winning Mackie Boys Team was printed along with the article. The Aberdeen and District Badminton League Tables were also printed in the paper.

CHAMPS SHOW THEIR CLASS

The chase for the Division One Gents title in the Aberdeen and District Badminton League is almost over. Last season's champions Gordonians are determined to hold onto their title and are going about it in a convincing fashion. They comprehensively defeated an experienced CAS team by 9 rubbers to 0. They then recorded a 7-2 away victory over a Summerhill team with pretensions of their own for the title.

Gordonian's closest challengers, Fetteresso, won three times. The Stonehaven team beat Summerhill by 5-4, the closest of margins, with the youngsters in their team, Jason Guyan and Graham Ross winning three times to turn the match their way. They had an easier ride against Central Buchan winning the match by 8 rubbers to 1 and also defeating Portlethen by the same score. It is now certain that the title will be decided when Gordonians and Fetteresso meet in their last match with the winner taking all.

Fetteresso's task in Division One of the Mixed League is proving an altogether less stressful affair. Fetteresso beat Central Buchan 9-0 to make it eight wins out of eight in the Division. One more victory will bring home the title to Stonehaven for the third successive season. Meanwhile CAS won 6-3 away to Portlethen and that moves them into third place in the league table.

In Division Two of the Mixed League Cults Community Centre put a stop to Beacon's recent run of good form with a 5-4 home victory. Seasoned campaigners, Mike Smith and Sheila Jackson were the heroes for the home team winning all three of their rubbers in straight sets. They then were awarded a 9-0 walkover against Deveron and faced a reversal of that situation when they conceded a 9-0 walkover to Aberdeen University. Banchory's 7-2 home victory over Cults virtually assures them of the runners-up spot in the Division.

Match Secretaries are reminded to return all scorecards as soon as possible.

INVITATIONAL MIXED RESULTS

Thirty of the Aberdeen area's finest badminton players took part in the North East Badminton Group's 2003 Invitational Mixed Badminton Tournament. The tournament was played at Kincorth Sports Centre the previous weekend. At the start of the tournament the 15 gents and 15 ladies were thrown into a hat and partners drawn at random. The mixed couples were then placed into four separate pools.

Pool One consisted of Colin Ross and Diana Benzie, Jason Guyan and Sheila Valentine, Bob Glennie and Nicola Bruce and Paul Wilson and Susan Spence. In a pool that contained four players from the League's top mixed Team, Fetteresso, it was not surprising that the pool winners contained a Fetteresso player. Colin and Diana won all their games with Paul and Susan finishing as runners-up.

Pool Two contained three couples made up of players from CAS and Fetteresso. Scottish Under 17 title holder, Calum Menzies teamed up with Rachael Rennie and this combination proved too good for the experience of Steve Thomson and Susan Duncan and Robbie Dunbar-Smith and Pauline Duncan, the latter pairing finishing as group runners-up. Top dogs in Pool Three were Liew Nam Min of Gordonians and Marion Wands of Racquets. They defeated Craig Walker and Julie Price, Andy Forrest and Margaret Duncan and runners-up Dave Plank and Marion Sutherland, both from Racquets.

In Pool Four it was the pairing of Craig Stewart of Portlethen and Jane Aitcheson of CAS that prevailed. They pushed Goh Chee and Shona Gatt into second place, with Gordon Spence and Stacey Wood and Colin Anderson and Pam Cowell taking up third and fourth places respectively.

The first semi final featured Craig and Jane against Liew and Marion, with the former winning 15-10, 15-6. In the second semi, the mixed experience and court craft of Colin and Diana were the telling factors in defeating Calum and Rachael 15-7, 15-5. The final was almost an anti climax compared to what went on earlier and the fitness and power of Craig and Jane saw them win in straight sets, 15-9, 15-3. This was a notable double for Craig, who had won the Invitational Gents title in January, in partnership with Craig Walker.

Fetteresso have clinched the Division One Mixed title after defeating Racquets by 8 rubbers to 1. Fetteresso Ladies were also in top form winning 3-1 at home against Portlethen. The Ladies Division One title will now be decided in Fetteresso's last match against CAS.

Match Secretaries are asked to note that all League matches must be played by Wednesday 30 April 2003.

FETTERESSO ARE DOUBLE CHAMPS

Feteresso Badminton Club confirmed their status as the premier club in the Aberdeen and District Badminton League. They did this by winning both the Gents and Mixed Division One Titles. Their season reached its crescendo on Monday evening when they defeated their closest rivals, Gordonians, by 5 rubbers to 4 to clinch the Division One Gents title at Banchory Sports Centre.

Martin Stuart and Craig Walker of Gordonians tried desperately to hold on to the title that Gordonians have held for the past two years but their three rubbers were not enough. As tensions rose, Fetteresso retained their cool and Graham Ross and Jason Guyan edged out Liew Nam Min and Alan Fish in the deciding rubber by 6-15, 15-9, 15-9. This was Fetteresso's first Division One Gents title since 1982. In the same Division Portlethen defeated CAS 9-0 courtesy of a walkover.

Fetteresso's retention of their Mixed Division One title has proved much easier. With one match outstanding, they now cannot be caught following CAS's conceding a 9-0 walkover to Portlethen. The Mixed Division Two title has been won by Aberdeen University. Though no teams were in action, results were posted by default. The students outstanding match against their closest challengers Banchory was declared null and void as was their match against Beacon.

In the Ladies League, CAS won the title by edging out their closest challengers, Fetteresso by one rubber. It was unfortunate that theses two teams did not manage to play each other this season, both fixtures being declared null and void.
