BADMINTON MEETING DATE

The Aberdeen and District Badminton League have arranged their Annual General Meeting for Tuesday 31 August. Clubs affiliated to the League and those wishing to join are invited along to the AGM, which will be held at the Grammar FP Club at 86 Queens Road, Aberdeen. The meeting is due to start at 7.30pm. A full Agenda is proposed and clubs will be asked to vote on a number of issues. Clubs are reminded that League subscriptions (currently £5 per team) should be paid at the meeting.

A major issue of concern to be discussed at the AGM is the rise in Council School hall lets. The hike in prices for hiring school sports halls is threatening the existence of some clubs and is causing others to review the times they play and to look for new venues. Some clubs are believed to be considering amalgamation. The North East Badminton Group Convener, Susan Spence has written to the League expressing her concern and suggested that the League should be looking at hiring a central venue to play league matches. This will no doubt be discussed fully at the meeting. Full details of the AGM Agenda are available on the League's Web Site at http://www.users.globalnet.co.uk/~braesplc/northeastbadminton/.

The North of Scotland Open, which is to be held at the Beacon Sports Centre on the weekend of Saturday 25th and Sunday 26th September, will run on a doubles format this year. This new approach will guarantee a minimum number of games for competitors and includes mens, ladies and mixed doubles events. The closing date for entries is September 15. More details on the competition and entry forms can be obtained from Andy Alexander the Tournament Referee (Telephone Aberdeen 740366).

ABERDEEN BADMINTON LEAGUE AGM

The Aberdeen and District Badminton League held their Annual General Meeting at the Grammar FP Club at the end of August. The meeting held before the beginning of each new season debated a number of issues raised by the Clubs and League Committee. Hall lets were discussed at the start of the meeting and the spiraling costs of Council school hall lets in Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire were identified as causing problems for several League clubs. Consideration was given to the idea of having one central venue for matches and clubs are asked to write to the League Secretary if they are willing to participate in such an arrangement next season. The issue of plastic versus feather shuttles was again raised at the AGM, not for the first time. Alan Nicoll the League Chairman considered that the high costs of feathers was no longer such an issue for clubs choosing with plastics, though poor maintenance of feather shuttles has also been a factor in clubs choosing the plastic option. The general consensus was that most clubs preferred to play with well maintained feathers as against plastic shuttles. No ruling was placed by the meeting on clubs being forced to play with one or the other, though the League would prefer if clubs would use feather shuttles in the interests of consistency and the opportunities offered for higher standards of play.

League subscriptions were frozen at £5 per club, however entry fees were raised for the League's Club Doubles Tournament to stem off further losses. The League Office Bearers were elected as follows:

Chairman Alan Nicoll

Secretary Malcolm Campbell

Assistant Secretary Margaret Sked

Committee Members Martin Stuart

Maureen McFarland

Robbie Dunbar-Smith

Thanks go to retiring Committee Member Vicky McGillivray of Portlethen Badminton Club for her assistance over the past two years.

The League Secretary is currently drawing up the division of the Leagues for the coming season and is proposing a Ladies Division of 7 teams (Banchory, BP Exel, CAS, Cults CC, Portlethen, Racquets and Summerhill). The Mixed League will consist of 3 Divisions, Division 1 includes CAS, Cults CC, Ellon Victoria, Fetteresso, Portlethen and Racquets; Division 2 includes BP Exel, Westhill, Cults CC "B", Racquets "B" and Summerhill; Division 3 includes Aberdeen University, Banchory, Beacon, ELF and Meadows. The Gents League will also consist of 3 Divisions, Division 1 includes CAS, Gordonians, Fetteresso, Summerhill, Racquets and Ellon Victoria; Division 2 includes Beacon, Portlethen, Grampian Police, BP Exel, Fetteresso "B" and ELF; Division 3 includes Westhill, Shell Pecten, Banchory, 71 Club, Bridge of Don, Aberdeen University and Civil Service.

Malcolm Campbell the League Secretary will send out full details of the Leagues and clubs fixtures next week. They will also be included in next week's Green Final.

The first results of the new season are now starting to come in and Gordonians look set to push CAS all the way for the Gents Division One title this season. Already they have posted two victories beating Racquets 6-3 and Fetteresso "A" 7-2. Top scorers were the tried and tested combination of Jasper Naylor and Alan Fish, though Colin ad Graham Ross of Fetteresso did manage to get the better of them in three sets in their match. The other results in Division One saw promoted newcomers Summerhill suffer from travel fatigue in losing 6-3 to Ellon in Fraserburgh, with the experienced pairing of Ritchie Burnett and John Noble anchoring the home team to victory; Summerhill had better luck at home in defeating Racquets by 6 rubbers to 3.

Beacon Badminton Club was in action twice in Division Two winning by 5-4 against BP Exel and losing by the same score to Grampian Police. Two results were returned in Division Three of the Gents League. Shell Pecten won 8-1 away to Bridge of Don, whilst newcomers Westhill defeated Civil Service by 6 rubbers to 3. Once again the experience of an established pairing (Ali Dow and Drew Clunie) was the telling factor in victory.

Mixed Division One champions CAS, started where they left of last season in winning 8-1 against Portlethen. In the same Division Racquets got off to a flier with a 7-2 home victory against Ellon Victoria. In Division Two of the Mixed League Summerhill had a memorable victory at Westhill winning 5-4, this despite losing 12-11 in games.

Clubs and players are reminded that the North East Restricted Badminton Tournament starts next week at Kincorth Academy and runs from Monday through to the Finals night on Saturday.

NORTH EAST BADMINTON FINALS RESULTS

The North East Restricted Badminton Tournament Finals were held at Kincorth Academy Games Hall on Saturday 30 October. The Mens Singles had a new winner with Liew Nam Min defeating last year's Champion, Steve Thomson, 7-15, 15-13, 15-13. Steve was also at the receiving end in the Mens Doubles Open Final losing with Graham Willox to the experienced pairing of Colin Ross and Gordon Spence (15-8,15-4). Steve had better luck however, in the Mixed Doubles Final winning 15-8,15-6 with partner Anne Shipley against Gordon and Susan Spence. The Ladies Doubles Open was won by Susan Spence and Robin Huthwaite who edged out Jane Aitcheson and Pauline Duncan 15-13,15-9. Pauline was more successful in the Ladies Singles Open winning in a pool against Shona Gatt and Jane Aitcheson.

In the Mixed Doubles Handicap Event seasoned campaigners Dave Plank and Jane Wilson(+6) defeated Andy Alexander and Janice Gordon(+10) 15-12,15-11. Mark Beattie and Dougie Buchan(+5) of Summerhill Badminton Club won the Mens Doubles Handicap Event beating Graham Gammack and Roy Paton(+6) 15-5,12-15,15-8 in the final. The Ladies Doubles Handicap Event was won by Ava Gray and Louise Yule(+6.5) 15-10,15-11 against Ailsa Duncan and Mellissa Stevenson(+12).

Bob Glennie was defying his age in Seniors Events winning both the Mixed Doubles and the Mens Doubles. In the first of the two he and Anne Shipley defeated Dave Plank and Jane Wilson 15-3,15-8. In the Mens Event, Bruce Robertson and Bob had to go to three sets to beat Dave Plank and Ritchie Burnett 15-12,10-15,15-3.

The winners in the Junior Events were as follows:

Under 14 Boys Singles Winner: Gregor Angus

Runner-Up: Kyle Duncan

Under 18 Boys Singles: Winner: Thomas Longhurst

Runner-Up: Nick Sullivan

Under 14 Girls Singles: Winner: Ashley-Anne Robb

Runner-Up: Susan Johnston

Under 18 Girls Singles: Winner: Kate Goodenough

Runner-Up: Linsey Grant

In the Aberdeen Leagues last season's Division One Mixed Champions, CAS had a convincing 8-1 away win over Ellon Victoria. Meanwhile Racquets kept up their sprightly start to the season recording their second win, this time against Portlethen 7-2. Division Two of the Mixed League saw Summerhill record their second win of the season, 8-1 against Racquets "B". This puts them clear at the top of that Division. Aberdeen University got off to a fine start to the new season with 6 rubbers to 3 away victory over Banchory.

In the Gents League, Portlethen announced their title and promotion ambitions with a 6-3 win against ELF. Top pairing Craig Stewart and Roy Paton only dropped 13 points all evening. ELF bounced back however, recording two victories, a 5-4 win over Grampian Police and a walk over against Fetteresso "B". Shell Pecten moved clear at the top of Division 3 of the Gents League with another 5-4 win, this time against Civil Service, Tengku and K. Silek were the top couple for the victors. The Ladies League has now got underway with Banchory recording a 3-1 away win over Cults and CAS a 4-0 win at Summerhill.

Fetteresso Badminton Club have moved into top spot in Division 1 of the Mixed League. This was achieved by three victories over their opponents including a tight 5-4 home win against previous league leaders Racquets. The other victories were a 7-2 win over Cults CC and a 9-0 away win at Fraserburgh against Ellon Victoria. In Division 2 of the Mixed League Summerhill remain top despite not playing, whilst Westhill and Racquets "B" recorded their first victories of the season winning 6-3 and 9-0 against BP Exel and Cults "B" respectively. Aberdeen University stay top dogs in Division 3 with a convincing 9 rubbers to 0 win against the Meadows Badminton Club from Ellon.

Gordonians continue their dominance in Division 1 of the Gents League with a 7-2 victory over Ellon Victoria, this keeps them 4 points clear of their nearest challengers, though last year's champions, CAS have still to play a match this season. Division 2 of the Gents League saw Portlethen pull level with ELF on points with a 9-0 demolition of Fetteresso "B". In Division 3 Westhill had a comfortable 6-3 home victory against Bridge of Don as did Civil Service who won against the latter team by the same margin. Club Secretaries are asked to note that Banchory has withdrawn its Gents team from Division 3 due to lack of players. All matches against Banchory in that League are now declared null and void.

There are still a large number of outstanding fixtures for this half of the season and this is causing the League Committee some concern. Clubs are urged to try to play outstanding fixtures as soon as possible and return any outstanding scorecards.

Fetteresso Badminton Club's position at the top spot in Division 1 of the Mixed League was short lived. Missing the experience and court craft of Colin Ross they crashed to a 9-0 defeat against CAS, who now take over the lead position on rubbers. In Division 2 of the Mixed League Cults "B" got of the mark with a 6-3 home win over Westhill. Banchory responded well to the withdrawal of their Gents team from the League with a convincing 8 rubbers to 1 win over ELF in Division 3 of the Mixed League. A. Mills and Mike Millar were the only winners for the losers.

Gordonians maintained their 100% record in Division 1 of the Gents League with a tight 5-4 victory over last year's champions CAS, this despite 3 wins from CAS pairing Gordon Spence and Graham Shand. Civil Service were granted a 9-0 walk over against Aberdeen University who inexplicably could not arrange transport from the University to the Northern College. CAS moved two points clear at the top of the Ladies Division 1, defeating second placed club, Banchory 3-1.

Aberdeen players had success recently in the Inaugural Scottish National Veterans Championships played at the Cockburn Centre in Glasgow. Robin Huthwaite of CAS Badminton Club in partnership with Libby Hamilton defeated Lesley Douglas and Jean Steen 15-7,12-15, 15-7 in the final of the Over 40 Ladies Doubles. Colin Ross of Fetteresso Badminton Club in partnership with Colin Campbell lost to ex international Dan Travers and Leon Douglas 15-3,15-3 in the final of the Over 40 Men's Doubles Event. Colin and Robin then had to scratch from the Mixed Doubles Final due to Colin being injured.

Another player at the Championships was Aberdeen's own "Mr Evergreen", Ross Weir who lost to John Barrie 15-0, 15-5 in the Over 60 Men's Singles. Ross had no better luck in the Over 60 Men's Doubles final, losing in partnership with R Lindsay to John Barrie and J Fleming 15-7, 15-1. Ross put it down to not getting enough match practice prior to the Event. Congratulations to Ross, lets hope we can all aspire to that standard when we are over 60.

Gordonians Storm into the New Millennium

Gordonians completed the first half of their League programme in the Gents Division One with a 100% record. A 6-3 away victory over tricky Summerhill ensured that they go into the next century with a comfortable 4 point lead. Ian Stewart and Alan Fish were the top couple with 3 wins. The other results in that division saw CAS make up ground beating Summerhill by 8 rubbers to 1, Ellon Victoria by 7 rubbers to 2 and Fetteresso also by the same score. Fetteresso also defeated Summerhill 5-4 in the same Division. In Division 2 of the Gents League Portlethen had three straight victories, defeating Grampian Police 7-2, Beacon 6-3 and Elf 6-3. This keeps Portlethen's 100% record in Division Two. Fetteresso crashed to further defeats, this time against Beacon 5-4 and Elf 6-3. That sees the Stonehaven club firmly at the foot of the Division. Beacon won a tight away match against Elf 5-4 in the same Division.

There was a lot of activity in Division 3 of the Gents League over the past two months with Shell Pecten in action three times, losing heavily to Aberdeen University 8-1 and then only narrowly being edged out 5-4 by Westhill. They were more successful against 71 Club, defeating them 9-0. Pecten's stay at the top of the Division was short lived however, as Westhill had a convincing 7-2 home win against 71 Club to now lead the Division by 2 points. Civil Service, thanks to Watson and Davidson, won 6-3 away to 71 Club and now lie level with Shell Pecten in second place.

CAS confirmed their status as the best team in Division One of the Mixed League winning 8-1 against Racquets and gaining a 9-0 walk over against Cults. Cults are obviously having team problems as they were also forced to concede 9-0 to Ellon Victoria. Fetteresso won 7-2 at home against Portlethen to maintain their second place in that Division. In Division Two of the Mixed League, Cults "B" defeated Summerhill 6-3, but it was not quite enough to dislodge Summerhill from the top spot who had a 9-0 walk over against BP Exel. Aberdeen University had a fine 8 rubbers to 1 victory over Beacon and this sees them two points clear at the head of Division 3 of the Mixed League, ahead of Banchory who won 7-2 at Ellon against Meadows Badminton Club. Beacon had a 6-3 victory over Elf and a 9-0 walk-over against Banchory. One return in the Ladies League saw BP Exel record a 3-1 win over Racquets.

Clubs are asked to note that the League's Annual Club Doubles Tournament will take place at the Shell Sports Centre at Woodbank House, Pitfodels, Aberdeen on Sunday 30 January 2000. Details of the tournament have now been sent out to all League clubs. The Crombie Cup is also scheduled to take place at the same venue on Sunday 12 March 2000. A new format will see the competition being run all on one day. The Junior Crombie Tournament has been replaced by the "Activ-8 Crombie Junior League which gets underway early in the New Year.

ACTIV-8-BADMINTON JUNIOR CROMBIE LEAGUE

The new season's Activ-8 Junior Badminton League started in fine style with 24 teams competing in the first session at the Beach Leisure Centre, Aberdeen on Sunday 16 January 2000. The format has changed from the previous year's event and this will provide for more structured competition. Four sessions are proposed with the eventual winners being awarded the Junior Crombie Cup.

The Junior Crombie Cup has been competed for since 1959 by various Junior teams throughout the North East of Scotland. Activ-8 was therefore delighted when the Crombie Committee decided to donate the Cup to the Junior Badminton League. The original intention of the Crombie Cup Competition was to foster and promote competitive badminton throughout the North East and it is hoped that the Junior League will carry on this objective for years to come.

All teams in the Junior League have been graded and split into two Divisions of 12 teams each.

The Crombie Cup will be presented to the winners of Division 1. The winners of Division 2 will be presented with medals.

Each Division has been further divided into two Pools (A & B) of 6 teams, which will provide placings from 1 to 6.

Teams will then join a new Pool, by order of their placing, thus creating three Pools of 4 teams (C, D & E). e.g. 1st and 2nd teams in Pool A will join 1st and 2nd teams in Pool B.

Each team will play the other three teams in their Pool. This will give every team a final placing from 1-12 in Division 1 and 13-24 in Division 2.

Full details of the first session's results can be found on the League's Web Site at http://www.users.globalnet.co.uk/~braesplc/northeastbadminton/ The results show that Westhill Academy and The Gordon Schools, Huntly got off to a good start in Pools A and B of Division 1 respectively. In Division 2, Banff Academy (2) started well in Pool A, whilst the early lead in Pool B is tied between the two Mackie Academy teams. Prospects are looking good for an exciting outcome to the first round.

The next session will start at 9.30am on Sunday 6th February 2000 at the Beach Leisure Centre.

SENIOR BADMINTON LEAGUE RESULTS

In Division One of the Gents League, Racquets and Ellon Victoria were in action twice, against each other with Racquets winning 6-3 at home and Ellon winning their home tie by 7 rubbers to 2. In the same Division Fetteresso had a narrow 5-4 win over Summerhill and CAS defeated Ellon Victoria 8-1, but this was not enough to dislodge Gordonians from the top of the League. Results from the the Gents Division 2 saw Grampian Police lose 5-4 at home to Fetteresso "B". There was a lot of action in Division 3 of the Gents League, with Bridge of Don in action three times. They defeated 71 Club 6-3, while losing to Pecten 9-0 and Westhill 7-2. These results see Westhill back on top of that Division.

In Division One of the Mixed League Racquets defeated Ellon Victoria 5-4 and Fetteresso had a comprehensive 9-0 whitewash against a struggling Cults team. Cults second team faired better in Division 3, with a 7-2 home win over BP Exel. Two Walk Overs were recorded in Division 3 of the Mixed League with Beacon conceding 9-0 to Banchory and Meadows 9-0 to ELF.

Two results in the Ladies League have been received. Portlethen Ladies played their first match of the season, defeating Summerhill 3-1. Meanwhile CAS maintained their position as top club, with a 4 rubbers to 0 win over Cults.

The League's Annual Club Doubles Tournament was played last Sunday at the Shell Pecten Club at Woodbank House, Pitfodels, Aberdeen. A full report on the tournament will appear in next week's Green Final.

 LEAGUE CLUB DOUBLES TOURNAMENT REPORT

The League's Annual Club Doubles Tournament was held at the Shell Pecten Club's Sports Centre at Woodbank House recently. Whilst the entry was down from recent years, competition at the tournament was keen. The first event was the Ladies Doubles, which involved couples from CAS, Portlethen and Racquets, Badminton Clubs. Experienced pairing Jane Wilson and Anne Shipley from CAS were the victorious couple, defeating Lesley Yule and Ava Gray from Racquets 15-11, 15-9 and Portlethen's Fiona Rice and L Adams 15-10, 15-11. In the Gents Doubles Section A, four clubs participated: Fetteresso, Racquets, CAS and Gordonians. The eventual winners after a count back on games were Colin Ross and Robert Keith from Fetteresso Badminton Club. The Gents Doubles Section B featured couples from Westhill, Portlethen and BP Exel, Badminton Clubs. The Mixed Doubles commenced in the afternoon with 7 couples participating in two Sections. There were four couples contesting Section A, with couples from CAS, Portlethen, Fetteresso and Racquets. They defeated BP Exel (Mike Kinghorn and C Mathews) 15-7, 15-13 and edged out Drew and Angie Clunie of Westhill 15-11, 13-15, 15-11 to clinch the title.   Aberdeen Win Crombie Cup

An Aberdeen team, featuring a strong blend of youth, experience and some "French flair" won back the Crombie Cup on Sunday 12 March at the Shell Pecten Club. The Aberdeen Team, led by player manager Martin Stuart, defeated the districts of both Upper Deeside and Inverurie to lift the Trophy. Last years winners Ellon did not field a team. The Tournament was played in a revised format this season, with all matches played on the same day. The Aberdeen team of Martin Stuart, Y Hennaff, Steve Morrice, Pam Cowell, Anne Shipley and Rachel Rennie defeated Upper Deeside 8-1 in the first match. The Deesiders then went in head to head against Inverurie and went down 9-0, their cause not being helped by the forced retiral of Andy Hinchcliffe, due to injury. The Garioch players were not however, able to maintain their form and fell to the eventual winners, Aberdeen by 9 rubbers to 0.

The Aberdeen Leagues are now reaching the finishing post but most Divisions still have not declared a clear winner. In Division One of the Gents League, leaders Gordonians had a tight 5-4 away victory over Ellon Victoria. To clinch the title they still require to get a win against CAS, their nearest rivals. Two results were returned in Division Two of the Gents League with Fetteresso "B" being on the receiving end twice, firstly losing 5-4 to BP Exel and then by 6-3 to Beacon. The champions of this Division have already been declared with Portlethen now in an unassailable position. Westhill moved closer to the Division Three championship with a 6-3 win over their nearest challengers, Pecten. Civil Service kept up their bid for second spot with a 6-3 victory over 71 Club. Whilst CAS remain on top of Division One of the Mixed League, Cults CC, pulled themselves off bottom spot with three 5-4 victories, two against fellow relegation candidates Portlethen, and the other against Racquets. Meadows finally recorded their first victory of the season with a resounding 9-0 win against Beacon, this included a fine performance by junior Tyson Dunz. Following the recent upsurge in the fortunes of their Mixed team, Cults CC ladies recorded two victories in the Ladies League, winning 4-0 against BP Exel and 3-1 over Summerhill. CAS, however, still remain clear favorites to lift the title.

CAS Clinch Mixed Title

CAS Badminton Club clinched the Division One Mixed Title with three convincing victories over the past couple of weeks. They followed a 7-2 away victory over Racquets with back to back wins firstly against Ellon Victoria 8-1, and then the following night recording a 7 rubbers to 2 win against Cults CC "A". This leaves CAS on 18 points with one match to play. Also in the same Division, Fetteresso defeated Portlethen 8-1, which keeps Portlethen firmly in the relegation spot at the bottom, whilst their more southerly neighbours lie second from the top.

In Division 2 of the Mixed League bottom club BP Exel recorded their first victory of the season, a 8-1 win over Cults CC "B". Whilst this has raised their spirits it wasn't enough to lift them of the bottom. Banchory maintained their promotion challenge in Division Three of the Mixed League with a tight 5-4 victory over ELF. Aberdeen University could in theory overtake Banchory at the top if they win their outstanding matches. They require to play these soon if they are to succeed in this objective. The University did manage to play one game, in Division Three of the Gents League, but were on the wrong side of an 8-1 defeat against Bridge of Don Badminton Club. One result from the Ladies League, saw Racquets concede a walk over to Banchory.

Players and coaches of the Junior Crombie Badminton League are reminded that the third session of the Junior League will take place at Kincorth Sports Centre on Sunday 26 March 2000.

More League Titles Decided

A rush of results in the Aberdeen Leagues these past two weeks, has seen three more League titles decided. Division One of the Gents League returned 7 results, with League leaders Gordonians firstly winning 5-4 away to Fetteresso and then losing their first match of the season to their closest rivals CAS by 7-2. CAS also won 5-4 against Fetteresso and then clinched the League title, with a 7 rubbers to 2 win over Summerhill. CAS finished level on 18 points with Gordonians but edged out their rivals by virtue of their superior rubbers. Other results returned were Fetteresso with a 5-4 victory over Ellon and two victories in a double header against Racquets, both by the margin of 6-3. Westhill took the Division Three Gents title by virtue of a 9-0 walk over against Aberdeen University. Their other match against University was declared null and void. Closest challengers Shell Pecten beat Civil Service 8-1.

Summerhill clinched the Division Two Mixed Championship with two victories, a 9-0 win over Cults CC "B" and a 7 rubbers to 2 victory against Westhill. The Division One title in the Mixed League has already been won by CAS, however a number of results have been submitted for that Division, which help sort out the other places. Fetteresso had a 7-2 win over Racquets and a null and void fixture against Ellon, this ensures the Stonehaven Club of second place. Racquets were also on the receiving end of a 7-2 defeat by Cults CC "A". The Lower Deeside Club had a 6-3 away win over Ellon Victoria. Portlethen's position as bottom club was confirmed when they lost 9-0 at home to CAS and 5-4 to Ellon Victoria.

In Division Two of the Gents League Fetteresso "B" had a 9-0 walk over against Grampian Police, the Stonehaven Club's fixture against Portlethen was declared null and void. There were four match returns in the Ladies League, unfortunately they were all walk-overs. Summerhill conceded twice, firstly to Banchory then to BP Exel. Cults CC claimed the match against Portlethen whilst CAS claimed against BP Exel. The result of these fixtures was enough to confirm CAS as this years Ladies champions.

Club secretaries are reminded that all outstanding scorecards should be returned as soon as possible, otherwise the matches will be declared null and void.
