BADMINTON ARTICLE FOR GREEN FINAL: 23 SEPTEMBER 2000
The Aberdeen and District Badminton League season starts again on Wednesday 27 September 2000.
The first match, which is in Division Two of the Gents League sees newly promoted Westhill take on BP Exel. Since last season Shell Pecten have departed from the League, though that loss has been offset by the entry of Inverurie club Garioch to the League. The number of clubs registered with the League now stands at 20, comprising 44 individual teams.
Following the Annual General Meeting held on 29 August 2000, the Leagues have been divided up as follows:
 Mixed League: One division of 6 teams and two divisions of 5 teams;
Gents League: Two divisions of 6 teams, one division of 5 teams and one division of 4 teams; and
Ladies League: One division of 7 teams.
Clubs should note that in order to play in the Aberdeen and District League, they must affiliate to the Scottish Badminton Union. If they have not already done so, they should affiliate as soon as possible. The SBU can be contacted at the Cockburn Centre, 40 Bogmoor Place, Glasgow, G51 4TQ (Telephone 0141 445 1218, email: [email protected])

CAS SHOW THEIR STRENGTH
The Aberdeen and District Badminton League season started with Gents Division One champions CAS, registering a 7 rubbers to 2 victory over Stonehaven club Fetteresso. Top couple, were seasoned campaigners Bob Glennie and Robbie Dunbar-Smith who won all three of their rubbers. Colin Ross and Paul Wilson were the sole winners for Fetteresso.
The Mixed League kicked off with a match in Division Two. Newly promoted Banchory found the going tough against Westhill and despite a stuffy performance, ended up losing 9-0 to the home team. Other fixtures due to be played over the past two weeks have had to be postponed due to the unavailability of players.
The League now shuts down for two weeks for the school holidays. Following that the North East Restricted Badminton Tournament commences on Friday 27 October at Hazlehead Academy. The remainder of the Tournament will be played over the weekend of 28-29 October at the Shell Pecten Club at Woodbank House, Pitfodels, Aberdeen.
Entry forms have been sent out to clubs, and players are reminded that the entries should be sent in to Andy Alexander, Dalladies, Fairley Road, Kingswells, Aberdeen, AB15 8PZ by noon on Wednesday 18 October 2000.

BROCH IN RED HOT FORM
Fraserburgh Badminton Club is looking for a speedy return back to the Gents Division One of the Aberdeen and District Badminton League. Relegated on the narrowest of margins (games difference) last season the North East team had a convincing 7 rubbers to two away victory over Beacon in Division Two. Richard Burnett and John Noble took all three of their rubbers and for the losers Ian Robb and Neil Smith were the sole winners.
The Boys from the Broch then went one better recording a 9 rubbers to 0 away victory against Westhill, this with the same players that won at the Beacon. This sees them firmly established at the top of Division Two.
In Division Three of the Gents League, Grampian Police also relegated last season, got off to a flyer with a 7-2 win against Bridge of Don. This places them as the early pace setters in this division. Their next scheduled match is against 71 Club on the 29 October.
Attention turns to the North East Restricted Tournament this weekend, to be played at Hazlehead Academy and the Shell Pecten Cub at Woodbank. Due to the change in venue and format, finals of the different events will be held throughout the weekend.
We are pleased to announce that Racquets Badminton Club has finally secured a match venue. From the beginning of November they will be based at Northfield Academy, playing on Mondays from 8-10pm. The revised fixtures for Racquets home matches will be confirmed as soon as possible.
The Northeast badminton fraternity was saddned to learn of the death of Barry Wright. Barry played for Cults Community Centre Badminton Club and was their match secretary for many years.

FLYING START FOR GARIOCH NEW BOYS
Newcomers to the Aberdeen and District Badminton League, Garioch Badminton Club got off to a great start in Division 4 of the Gents League. They won by 6 rubbers to 3 against Cults CC. Ex Racquets players, Alan Denny, Alan Keith and Alan Keith formed an experienced backbone for the Inverurie Club. This proved too strong for a Cults team with a number of young players supported by the older heads of Mike Smith and Rob Wheadon.
Banchory Gents having rejoined the League after a year's absence also got off to a promising start in the Gents Division 4. They won 6-3 away to Aberdeen University "B" , this despite the student's pairing of A Paterson and D Brown winning three times. Banchory lie level on points with Garioch at the head of that Division.
In Division 3 of the Gents League, Meadows had a comfortable home victory over Grampian Police winning 8-1. Tyson Dunz winner of the Under 18 Boys Singles at the North East Restricted Badminton Tournament the other week, starred for the Ellon club.
The date and venue of the League's Annual Club Doubles Tournament have now been confirmed. The Tournament will be held at the Shell Pecten Club at Woodbank on Sunday 28 January 2001. Entry forms will be sent out to clubs at the beginning of December.

SUMMERHILL HAVE MIXED FORTUNES
At long last after delays resulting from the School Holidays and postponed matches, the Aberdeen Badminton Leagues have now come alive. Busiest club, were Summerhill who were in action four times over the space of two weeks.
First opponents were Fetteresso in Division One of the Gents League. Playing at Stonehaven the boys from Aberdeen went down by 7 rubbers to 2 against Fetteresso. Ken Watson and Dougie Buchan were the sole winners for Summerhill. Four days later Summerhill bounced back edging out newly promoted club, Portlethen 5-4, with Ken and Dougie again the star turns for the home club, winning all three of their rubbers. But it was back to being under the cosh two days later when facing Fetteresso again, this time in Division One of the Mixed League. Summerhill went down 9-0 at home to a full strength Fetteresso team. Summerhill then entertained Gordonians at home in the gents league and suffered a comprehensive 8-1 defeat.
Gordonians then went one better winning 9-0 against Racquets. This was enough to lift them above CAS in the League, who had a closer game against Racquets, winning 5-4, this despite Colin Anderson and Kevin Buckley winning all three of their rubbers for the home team.
In Division One of the Mixed League, Fraserburgh got off to a fine start to their campaign winning 6-3 at home to Cults CC. A solid all round team performance was the key to the Broch's success. CAS also had a winning start in the mixed, defeating Racquets by 8 rubbers to 1.
TotalFinaElf played their first match in Division Two of the Gents League losing by 5 rubbers to 4 at home against Beacon, a win anchored for the Bucksburn club, by the top pairing of Ian Robb and Neil Smith. Fetteresso B also played their first match in that Division, losing in a cliff hanger 5-4 away to Westhill. Leading 4-3 with two rubbers to play, Westhill pulled on all of their reserves to win the remaining rubbers, both in three setters. Fraserburgh, however, remain top of that Division with two victories.
Clubs in that Division should note that BP Exel have been unable to field any teams this season and have now withdrawn their team from the League.
In Division 4 of the Gents League Cults CC had an easy 9-0 away win against Banchory. In Division
Two of the Mixed League Banchory went down 7-2 to Aberdeen University, which leaves them pointless after two matches. Westhill remain top of Division Two by virtue of the greater number of rubbers. Grampian Police played their second match in Division Three of the Mixed League, but have yet to break their duck. Newly formed Garioch were much to strong for them winning by 9 rubbers to 0. Also in that League Beacon won 9-0 at home to TotalFinaElf.
First action took place in the Ladies League in November with last season's champions CAS in action twice, winning by 4 rubbers to 0 on both occasions. Firstly at home to Garioch and then away to Banchory.
Players who would like to play on Sundays are welcome to attend the City of Aberdeen Badminton Club. It runs from 2-4pm at Banks O'Dee Sports Centre, Spain Park, Abbotswell Road, Aberdeen (Telephone 01224 - 893333)

GORDONIANS SEIZE LEAGUE INITIATIVE
Gordonians won their third victory of the season in Division One of the Men's League, with a 9-0 whitewash against promoted team Portlethen. This gives them a 9 rubbers lead over CAS, the current Division One champions. CAS were also in action against Portlethen winning 5-4 away from home. Portlethen's woes continued with an 8-1 defeat against Fetteresso, their cause not being helped by their star player, Craig Stewart taking a winter break in Las Vegas.
One game was played in Division One of the Mixed League, with Racquets just edging out Summerhill by 5 rubbers to 4 at Northfield. This could be a crucial victory in the fight to stay up this season.
Portlethen have certainly been the busiest club over the past few weeks, they were in action twice in Division 2 of the Mixed League. Firstly winning 9-0 away to Banchory, then two days later, no doubt boosted by the return of their stateside wanderer Craig from "thanksgiving" celebrations, winning 8-1 at home to the league leaders, Westhill. These victories were enough to lift them above Westhill on a superior rubbers difference, this despite Westhill having a 6-3 home victory over Aberdeen University, a win anchored by top performers, Keith Walker and Shona Gatt.
One result was returned in Division Three of the Mixed League, a 9-0 walkover for Meadows over TotalFinaElf who were unable to raise a team for the fixture.
In the Ladies Division, Portlethen had a 2-2 draw against Westhill. CAS remain top of that Division with full points from their completed fixtures.
The Activ-8 Junior Crombie League starts its first session of the 2000-2001 season at the Beach Leisure Centre on Sunday 3 December 2000. Twenty four teams will be competing to win the Junior Crombie Trophy, currently held by Westhill.

BROCH SIDE KEEP UP UNBEATEN CHARGE
Fraserburgh kept their unbeaten record in Division Two of the Gents League, winning twice by the score of 8-1. First victims were TotalFinaElf whose sole winners in the trip to the Broch were Mike Miller and Jim Florence. Next team to go down were Fetteresso B who lost their 100% home record. Their only winners were the established pairing of Ross Watson and Andy Hinchcliffe. Westhill maintained their position as closest challengers to Fraserburgh with a 7 rubbers to 2 victory over Beacon. This still sees them 4 points adrift of the boys from the Broch.
Civil Service had an active time in Division Three of the Gents League over the past month. They recorded three victories, the first a 5-4 away win against 71 Club, Watson and Davidson winning all three of their rubbers. The second was a 9-0 walkover against University, the students calling off the fixture at the eleventh hour. The third was an 8-1 away win over Bridge of Don. Civil Service then went down 8-1 to Grampian Police but their three wins were enough to put them 2 points clear at the top of the Division.
In Division Four of the Gents League, University B entertained Cults Community Centre with the Deeside club registering a 7-2 victory. Mike Smith and R Grant won all three of their rubbers.
Fraserburgh's mixed team went to the top of Division One without playing a game. Their home match against Summerhill was conceded by the away team, so a 9-0 walkover was recorded. There is a backlog of fixtures waiting to be played in this Division and clubs are asked to submit scorecards as soon as possible.
Fetteresso had their first outing in the ladies league winning by 3 rubbers to 1 at Westhill.

UPS AND DOWNS FOR FETTERESSO IN MIXED
Fetteresso played twice in Division One of the Mixed League winning 9-0 away to current league leaders Fraserburgh and then going down narrowly to CAS by 5 rubbers to 4 at Stonehaven. Their victory was enough to haul them above Fraserburgh into top spot on superior rubbers. At the lower end of the Division, Cults Community Centre won 5-4 against Racquets with Jasper Naylor and Lynne MacFarlane winning all three of their rubbers.
In Division Two of the Mixed League Cults Community Centre "B" were in action for the first time and like their "A" team they won by the margin of 5-4, against Aberdeen University. In Division Three, Garioch won convincingly by 7 rubbers to 2 against Beacon. This draws them level on points with Meadows at the top of the division. In the same division TotalFinaElf had a 6-3 victory over Grampian Police.
Activity was also high in the Gents Leagues. Fetteresso had a 7-2 away win over Racquets in Division One. In the second division TotalFinaElf were in action twice, unfortunately two time losers, firstly to Fetteresso "B", by the margin of 6-3. Two days later they went down at home to Westhill by 8 rubbers to 1. Fraserburgh are the mid season league leaders in Division Two, having a 100% record.
In Division Four Garioch kept their unbeaten record with a comprehensive 9-0 defeat over Banchory.
The Activ-8 Junior Crombie League kicked off at the Beach Leisure Centre on Sunday 3 December. Twenty four teams from secondary schools and clubs across the North East of Scotland participated in the League.

HALF SEASONS RESULTS ROUND-UP
Gordonians maintained their unbeaten record in the Gents Division One of the Aberdeen and District Badminton League with an emphatic 8-1 away victory over nearest challengers Fetteresso. Paul Wilson and Jason Guyan picked up the only rubber for the losers. Gordonians, however, have still to play last season's champions CAS and that match has been scheduled for early in 2001.
At the bottom end of the Division One, Racquets had a fruitful end to the first half of the season, beating both their closest rivals, Summerhill by 7 rubbers to 2 and Portlethen by 5 rubbers to 4. This despite Roy Paton and Craig Stewart, winning all three rubbers in the Portlethen match. Portlethen now lie bottom of Division One and must gain ground against closest rivals, Summerhill if they are to avoid relegation.
In the Gents Division Three, Grampian Police had a 9-0 whitewash over 71 Club. This puts them at the top of that Division, ahead of Civil Service on superior rubbers.
Champions CAS remain top of the Ladies League at the halfway stage, after recording a 3-1 win against Fetteresso.
In the Mixed Division One of the League, CAS is again the top club, after winning 9-0 against Fraserburgh. In the same Division Dougie Buchan and Connie Hamilton won all three of their rubbers against Cults Community Centre "A" but this could not prevent Summerhill going down by 6 rubbers to 3 at home. Cults now join Fetteresso and Fraserburgh in joint second place in Division One.
League newcomers Garioch are top dogs in Division Three of the Mixed League after demolishing TotalFinaElf by 9 rubbers to 0. Closest rivals, Beacon kept up their challenge with a comprehensive 9-0 victory over Grampian Police.
There are still a number of outstanding fixtures from the first half of the season and these should be played as soon as possible. If any of these matches have already been played, the scorecards should be returned to the League Secretary as soon as possible.
Clubs are reminded that the closing date for entries for the League's Club Doubles Tournament is Saturday 20 January 2001. The Tournament will be played at the Shell Pecten Club on Sunday 28 January 2001. Also to played on that date is the second round of the Activ-8 Junior Crombie League, at the Beach Leisure Centre.

RAMPANT GORDONIANS MOVE INTO TOP SPOT
CAS's stranglehold on Division One of the Gents League was looking very fragile after their 7-2 defeat at the hands of a full strength Gordonians.
CAS brought Gordon Spence out of retirement to partner Steve Thomson for this match, but this was not enough to stem the tide against a rampant Gordonians team. North East singles champion for the past two years Liew Nam Min teamed up with Craig Walker to win all three of their rubbers, defeating Gordon and Steve in the only three setter of the match. Gordonians now move four points clear of nearest challengers Fetteresso at the top of Division One.
In Division Two of the Gents League, Fraserburgh continued their march back to Division One with a 7-2 win over Beacon. Fraserburgh now have a four point advantage over closest challengers, Westhill.
Civil Service showed that they are serious about promotion from Division Three of the Gents League, winning 5-4 against 71 Club. Watson and Davidson were the stars for the "Service" winning all three of their rubbers. 71 Club have obviously strengthened their team with the acquisition of John McManus, formerly of BP Exel.
Westhill made their move in Division Two of the Mixed League, winning 7-2 away to Banchory. This took them to the top of the Division, ahead of Portlethen on rubbers. Their stay at the top was short lived. Banchory were again in action two days later, this time away to Portlethen, with the Deeside team going down by 8 rubbers to 1. This saw Portlethen leapfrog above Westhill to again go top of Division Two.
The second stage of the Activ-8 Junior Crombie League starts at the Beach Leisure Centre this Sunday. Leading after the first stage with full points are Portlethen Juniors and Banff Academy (1). These teams still have to play last years winners, Westhill (1) and runners-up Mackie Academy (1). In Division Two there are three teams on full points, Mackie Academy (2), Banff Academy (2) and Banff Academy (3).
The League's Club Doubles Tournament is played tomorrow and a full results round up will be available next weekend.

VETERAN PAUL TAKES DOUBLES TITLE AGAIN
Fetteresso's Paul Wilson and Shelia Valentine(handicap 1) successfully defended their Mixed Doubles Title at the League's Club Doubles Tournament at the Shell Pecten Club on Sunday last. Paul and Shelia were placed in the "Group of Death" with four other couples, from Beacon (Andy Alexander and Kath Stephen - handicap 9.5), Portlethen (Jim Beaton and Fiona Rice - handicap 7), Garioch (Alan Denny and Ava Gray - handicap 2) and Racquets (Bobby Farrer and Margaret Sked - handicap 7).
Paul and Shelia won all four of their matches against the other couples, though required 3 sets to put away Portlethen and Beacon. Portlethen edged out Garioch to gain second place, by virtue of their better games difference. Evergreen Paul has now won this title, with different partners, 5 times in the past 13 years.
In the Ladies Doubles section of the Tournament, Westhill's Shona Gatt and Lynne Wilson won the Ladies title for the first time. Off a handicap of 1 they defeated Beacon's Janice Gordon and Claire Johnston (handicap 10) 15-11, 15-14, and Fetteresso's Margaret and Pauline Duncan (handicap 2) 15-8, 15-13. Fetteresso beat Beacon 15-13, 15-11 in the other game in the section.
Four couples from Division One of the League contested the Gents Doubles Title (Section A). Drawing confidence from their position at the top the League, the Gordonians pairing of Philip Anderson and Andy Drummond (handicap 5) won all three of their matches in straight sets to lift the title yet again for their club. Second in the section were Fetteresso's Graham Ross and Robert Keith (handicap 1) who defeated Portlethen's (Roy Paton and Graham Gammack - handicap 2) and Racquet's (Kevin Buckley and Colin Anderson - handicap 3).
Only two clubs contested Section B of the Gents Doubles. Mike Kinghorn and David Brodie of Garioch (handicap 1) defeated Mike Watson and Chas Davidson of Civil Service (handicap 8) 15-8, 15-9.
In the League four results were returned. Portlethen had a 9-0 walkover against Aberdeen University in the Mixed Division Two. In Division Three of the Mixed League Beacon had a convincing 9-0 win over TotalFinaElf. Grampian Police had an 8 rubbers to 1 victory over Bridge of Don to go top of Division Three of the Gents League. In the Ladies League Westhill drew 2-2 away to Banchory.

MEADOWS MARCH TO TOP OF TABLE
The Meadows Badminton Club from Ellon maintained their unbeaten record in Division 3 of the Mixed League with two convincing victories. They won 7-2 away to Grampian Police and then had a 9-0 walkover against TotalFinaElf. This puts them 2 points clear at the top of the Division. Beacon and Garioch, however, are still very much in contention, especially the latter club who Meadows have yet to play.
Portlethen put further distance between themselves and Westhill at the top of Division 2 of the Mixed League. An 8 rubbers to 1 victory over Cults CC "B" saw them retain their unbeaten record. Mike Smith and Shelia Jackson were the sole winners for the Deeside team.
Cults CC Ladies team is now back in business thanks to the efforts of Lynne Macfarlane. They played their first match at the end of January recording a 2-2 draw with Portlethen Ladies. Lynne and her partner Anne Christiansen won twice for the Cults team.
Gordonians are maintaining excellent progress towards wresting back the Division One title in the Gents League from rivals CAS. Fielding another strong team they comprehensively defeated Racquets 9-0 at Northfield. They have now stretched their lead to 6 points over Fetteresso and CAS.
In Division 3 of the Gents League 71 Club recorded their first victory of the season, winning 6-3 against Bridge of Don.
The Activ-8 Junior Crombie League ran their second session at the Beach Leisure Centre on Sunday 28 January 2001. Twenty four teams from secondary schools and clubs across the North East of Scotland again participated in the League.

NEW EVENT FOR SENIORS
A new Open Badminton Tournament will take place in Aberdeen next month. The North of Scotland Senior Invitation Team Event will run from the 10-11 March at the Beach Leisure Centre and Shell Pecten Club. Teams from Aberdeen and Edinburgh have already confirmed that they will take part and the organizer's, the North East Badminton Group, are seeking to attract teams from Glasgow, Dundee and Fife.
A new scoring system will be used for the tournament with matches being the best of 5 rubbers played up to 7 points.
The North East Restricted Junior Badminton Tournament, however, takes place first. The event will be played at two venues, Kincorth and Hazlehead Academies on the 24 and 25 February. The Tournament includes Boys and Girls Doubles and Singles events. The closing date for entries is Saturday 17 February.
Also coming up soon on the Junior Badminton Circuit is the third session of the Activ-8 Junior Crombie League, which takes place at the Beach Leisure Centre on Sunday 18 February. Joint leaders at the halfway stage in Division One are Banff (1) and last season's winners Westhill (1). In Division Two Banff (3) lead with a 100% record.
The North of Scotland Junior Open Badminton Championships are scheduled to take place at the Shell Pecten Club on Saturday 31 March and Sunday 1 April. Entry forms for the Tournament can be obtained from Janice Gordon (Telephone 01224 - 486456). The closing date for entries is 21 March.
A date has now been set for the AGM of the North East Badminton Group. It is Tuesday 24 April 2001. Clubs will be notified with full details nearer the date.
One result from the Leagues, which were badly hit by the blizzards last week, saw Civil Service gain a walkover against Aberdeen University in Division 3 of the Gents League. This sees the Service leapfrog above Grampian Police to go top of the Division again.

They both won their singles events and Tyson partnered Chris Ross to the Doubles title in the 1984 Boys Doubles Event, whilst Elaine won the 1984 Girls Doubles Event in partnership with Kate Goodenough.
Full marks to the kids, their parents (some who traveled from as far afield as Forres) and the organizers who braved the atrocious weather conditions over the weekend to make the tournament a huge success.

Winners' of the Pools were Tyson Dunz, Stuart Docherty, Keiran Hendry, Nick Sullivan, Ross Adamson, Alan Campbell, John Rae and Chris Ross. GORONIANS ON BRINK OF BEING CHAMPIONS
In the words of singer Andy Williams, Goronians are "almost there". The Division One pace setters, unbeaten in Division One of the Gents League would require a total collapse in their last two matches and an amazing transformation in the fortunes of CAS, the only team who theoretically can overtake them, to see them lose out on this season's championship.
Gordonians, despite fielding an under strength team, beat closest challengers Fetteresso, 8-1 to move closer to the title, whilst CAS lost 5-4 at home to Racquets. Fetteresso did however win 8-1 away against Summerhill, the latter club involved in a dogfight with Portlethen to avoid relegation.
In Division One of the Mixed League Fetteresso opened up a 4 point lead at the top of the Table, courtesy of 8-1 and 9-0 wins over Racquets and a 9-0 walk over against Summerhill. In the same Division, Racquets recorded a 6-3 victory over Fraserburgh.
Four matches were played in the Ladies League. Portlethen ladies were in action twice, winning 3-1 against Banchory, then going down 4-0 to Fetteresso. The Stonehaven Club then went on to beat Banchory 4-0 to move to the top of the Table, on superior rubbers over CAS. Westhill improved their position in the League with a 3-1 home victory over Cults CC.
Beacon moved into a three way tie with Meadows and Garioch in Division Three of the Mixed League after a 7-2 home victory over Meadows. The fight to avoid bottom spot in Division 3 saw TotalFinaElf make a decisive move by beating Grampian Police 6-3 to anchor the "force" at the foot of the Table.
Grampian Police moved to the top of Division Three of the Gents League, but only by the narrowest of margins. The undefeated police team beat closest rivals Civil Service by 7 rubbers to 2 to go level on points and rubbers and only claim top spot by virtue of their superior games difference. They do however have two games in hand.
In the Gents Division Four, Aberdeen University recorded their first victories of the season with 7-2 and 9-0 wins over Bridge of Don.

NEW SCORING SYSTEM ON TRIAL AT NORTH OPEN
Due to previous lack of support for the traditional knock-out format of the North of Scotland Open, the North East Badminton Group opted for a different format for their open tournament this season.
An invitational team tournament was organised and contacts were made with various members of the badminton fraternity across Scotland. Three teams entered - Edinburgh, Dundee and the North East. A clash of dates with other domestic and International events unfortunately prevented more teams from entering.
The team tournament ran on the previous Saturday at the Beach Leisure Centre with each match consisting of 7 rubbers. Recent publicity indicates that the International Badminton Federation is keen to try a new scoring system in an attempt to make badminton more attractive to media coverage. Each rubber consisted of the best of 5 sets to 7 points (setting to 2 points at 6 all an option). This scoring system was received with mixed enthusiasm by the competitors, although most enjoyed the opportunity to try it. Further development may see it adopted as the norm if it proves popular with television companies. Watch this space!
The final placings were: 1st - Edinburgh. 2nd - North East and 3rd - Dundee Results: North East vs Dundee 6 - 1 North East vs Edinburgh 2 - 5 Edinburgh vs Dundee 5 - 2 As the team tournament was completed on the Saturday, it was decided to organise a level doubles tournament on the Sunday at the Shell Pecten Club.
A degree of seeding was made and partnerships drawn from a hat. This format proved to be popular and very sociable. Games were played in pools and highly contested.
The results were:
Ladies Doubles: Winners Wendy Symington (Dundee) Carolyn Young
(Edinburgh)
Runners Jane Aitcheson (North East) Up Hayley Donnelly (Dundee)
Mens Doubles: Winners Liew Nam Min (North East) Lindsay Law (Dundee)
Runners Keith Donald (Edinburgh) Up Andy Middleton (Dundee)
Overall the event was successful both from the players and organisers perspectives. Gordon Spence of the North East Group has already had discussions regarding expanding the event for next year to include a team from the European Junior Squad and a Scottish Veterans team.
Results from the Aberdeen Badminton Leagues saw Racquets win 6-3 against Portlethen, the latter club must now win their match against Summerhill to retain their Division One Mens status. In Division Two of the Gents League Fraserburgh clinched promotion and the championship with a 9-0 home win over Westhill.
CAS kept up their hopes of retaining the Division One Mixed title with a 9-0 away victory against Fraserburgh. In Division Two Cults CC had a 6 rubbers to 3 victory over Banchory.
In the Ladies League Garioch recorded two home wins. They firstly beat Cults CC 4-0 and the went on to defeat Westhill by 3 rubbers to 1.

GORDONIANS ARE CHAMPIONS FOR A RECORD 13th TIME
Gordonians Badminton Club has taken back the Division One Gents Title from CAS. In a memorable six months, Byron's Boys won their last two matches to finish the season unbeaten.
In the space of two days they beat their most dangerous opponents CAS 6-3 and followed that win with an 8-1 victory over Portlethen. CAS had brought out their top guns Steve Thomson and Gordon Spence for the match against Gordonians and they duly won their three rubbers. However the Gordonians team had strength in depth and they won the day, but not without a fighting effort from CAS's second and third pairings who were on the wrong side of 5 rubbers which went to 3 sets.
Portlethen Gents had already put a damper on CAS's title aspirations with a 6-3 away victory over last season's champions. This sets them up nicely for the relegation decider against Summerhill. Winner takes all!
In Division Four of the Gents League Garioch are marching to the title with two wins. They defeated University "B" and Cultc CC both by 9-0 margins. Nearest rivals Cults CC also seem likely to gain promotion to Division Three, as under the current League Constitution two teams are promoted in the lower Divisions. University "B" recorded their first victory in the Division with a 7-2 away victory over Banchory.
Westhill recorded three notable victories in Division Two of the Mixed League. They firstly defeated University in a 9-0 walk over. They followed that with a 5-4 home victory over promotion favourites, Portlethen. They then scraped a 5-4 away win at the tricky venue of Cults. Drew Clunie and Elaine Walker were the heroes winning all three of their rubbers. This takes them two points ahead of Portlethen for the first time this season. Portlethen demolished University by 9-0 and now need to win their remaining match against Cults CC "B". This would see them lift the title on superior rubbers.
The final session of the Activ-8 Junior Crombie League gets underway at the Beach Leisure Centre tomorrow. The Junior Crombie Cup could still be won by a number of teams with defending champions Westhill, Mackie and Banff (1) all in contention. In Division Two the favourites are Banff (2) and Mackie (2).
The North of Scotland Open starts at the Shell Pecten Club next weekend and includes Under 13 and 18 Events for boys and girls. The closing date for entries was 21 March 2001.
Aberdeen players in action at the Scottish Masters Badminton Champioships had mixed success. In the final of the over 40 mixed doubles, Phil Howe, Bolton and Robin Huthwaite, Aberdeen lost to Dan Travers and Christine Black 10-15, 7-15. In the final of the over 60 mixed doubles, Ross Weir, Aberdeen, and Violet Davidson, Stirling lost to John Barrie and Mary Odell 5-15, 6-15.

CALUM MENZIES IS THREE TIMES WINNER
Calum Menzies from Peterhead was once, twice, three times a winner at the North of Scotland Junior Open held at the Shell Pecten Club last weekend.
In the Under 17 Boys Section Calum the top seed, lifted the Boys Singles title from an entry of 28. He then teamed up with the defeated finalist, Graeme Brown from Larbert to win the Boys Doubles title. His hat trick of wins was completed when he won the Mixed Doubles in partnership with Victoria Wan from Glasgow.
Victoria Wan was successful also in the Under 17 Ladies Doubles Event winning with Laura Smillie from Motherwell. Aberdeen's Kate Goodenough and Elgin's Elaine Burns were Runners Up. In the final of the Ladies Singles Laura Smillie beat doubles partner Victoria Wan.
There was another three times winner at the Junior Open. In the Under 13 Section Linda Sloan from Glasgow won the Ladies Singles, Doubles and Mixed Doubles. Linda defeated her sister Gillian in the Singles and Mixed Finals. She then teamed up with her to win the Ladies Doubles Event.
In the Under 13 Boys Singles, Kenneth Young from Lanark defeated Niall Munro out of an entry of 17 boys. The Doubles Event was won by the unseeded pairing of Michael Brand and Paul Carrie from Invernesshire.
Two weeks previously we saw Banff Academy with some help from Turriff Academy lift the Activ-8 Junior Crombie League title at the Beach Leisure Centre. In a playoff Pool of four teams, Banff had already drawn 3-3 with last year's winners Westhill. They won their first match on Sunday against Mackie Academy(1) by 4-2. Westhill had meantime won their match against Cults Academy(1) by 5-1. In the final matches Westhill got off to a 2 nil lead against Mackie whilst Banff lost their first two singles matches to Cults. Both matches then took a dramatic twist with Westhill losing 4-2 to Mackie and Banff winning 4-2 against Cults. That meant Banff finished top with 5 points out of a possible 6. Mackie with 4 points finished Runners Up.
The final placings in Division 1 of the League were:
Division 1
1st Banff/Turriff Academy(1)
2nd Mackie Academy(1)
3rd Westhill Academy(1)
4th Cults Academy(1)
5th 3 Men and a Lady
6th Mearns Academy
7th= Portlethen Juniors
7th= Westhill Academy(2)
9th Robert Gordons(1)
10th Banchory Academy(1)
11th The Meadows
12th Northfield Academy(1)
In Division Two the four teams in the playoff pool were Mackie Academy(2), Banff Academy(2), Banff Academy(3) and Portlethen Academy(1). The Stonehaven School won all three of their matches to finish top of the Pool and win the Second Division title. Runners up were Banff Academy (2) with 4 points.
The final placings in Division 2 of the League were:
Division 2
1st Mackie Academy(2)
2nd Banff Academy(2)
3rd Portlethen Academy(1)
4th Banff Academy(3)
5th Cults Academy(2)
6th Portlethen Academy(2)
7th Northfield Academy(2)
8th Robert Gordons(2)
9th Banchory Academy(2)
10th Craigiebuckler Juniors(1)
11th Stoney Racqueteers
12th Craigiebuckler Juniors(2)
In the Aberdeen Leagues another title was decided, with the season drawing to a close. Fraserburgh have now clinched the Division Two Gents title. They stand unbeaten with one fixture remaining. In the same division Beacon defeated Westhill 5-4 in a close encounter and TotalFinaElf won their first match of the season defeating Fetteresso "B" 6-3.
In Division One of the Gents League Portlethen won the relegation tussle against Summerhill by 8 rubbers to 1. Summerhill then lost 5-4 at home to Racquets. Summerhill, however, still have two outstanding matches against CAS to be played. CAS meanwhile won 5-4 against Fetteresso with Colin Ross and Paul Wilson winning three times for the losers.
In Division Three of the Gents League, Civil Service once again climbed above Grampian Police to go top of the League, after defeating Bridge of Don 5-4 away from home. Their tie at the top was short lived as the Police then went on to beat University 5-4 and go back on top.
A number of matches still remain to be played in Division One of the Mixed League. Fetteresso remain top after a 9-0 walkover against Cults CC, but CAS are hot on their heels after another 9-0 win, this time against Racquets. Racquets had better luck against Cults CC winning 6-3.
In Division Two of the Mixed League Portlethen won the title and promotion to Division One after a comprehensive 8-1 away win over Cults CC "B". The Deeside club did however record a 6-3 away win over Banchory. University's match against Banchory has been declared null and void.
Garioch are setting themselves up nicely for promotion from Division Three of the Mixed League after a 9-0 win against Meadows.
CAS remain top of the Ladies Division after a 4-0 win against Portlethen. Their cause was not helped by granting a 4-0 walkover to Westhill.
Colin Ross of Fetteresso appears to be revitalised now that he is competing regularly in Senior Events. In partnership with Lynne McFarlane of Cults CC he won the City of Aberdeen Invitation Mixed Tournament defeating Paul Wilson and Rachael Rennie 15-5, 15-10 in the final at Kincorth Leisure Centre on Friday 30 March 2001.

GARIOCH AND POLICE CLOSE IN
A fixture backlog is delaying a conclusion to many of the titles in the Aberdeen Badminton Leagues. Heavy snow falls in February have left clubs with a number of outstanding fixtures and they have until the end of April to complete these matches. Unfulfilled fixtures after that date will be declared null and void.
Matches played over the past few weeks have seen both Grampian Police and Garioch move tantalizingly close in the Leagues to clinching titles. In Division three of the Gents League University was in action twice, firstly defeating 71 Club by 8 rubbers to 1 and then winning 8-1 against Grampian Police. The "force" however remain top of the Division with one game in hand, against bottom club 71 Club. Providing they don't lose the match to a walkover they will win the championship and promotion to the Second Division.
Garioch have all but clinched the Mixed Division Three title. They won 9-0 away against TotalFinaElf and then went on to defeat their closest challengers, Beacon by 6 rubbers to 3. They have one remaining match to play against Meadows.
Garioch were also in action in the Ladies League winning 4-0 against Banchory. This takes them into second spot with the top three clubs all having one fixture to complete. The winner will come from Garioch, CAS or Fetteresso.
The Annual General Meeting of the North East Badminton Group takes place on Tuesday 24 April starting at 7.30pm. The venue for the AGM is the offices of Clark and Wallace, Solicitors at 14 Albyn Place, Aberdeen. Each SBU affiliated club should send a representative to the AGM. An update and review of the Group's Action Plan for the North East will be carried out at the meeting.
Best wishes go to veteran Ross Weir from Aberdeen who is jetting off to Canada to play in the Canadian Masters Badminton Tournament. Evergreen Ross will be playing in the over 60's section and will hope to go one better than last year when he reached the semi finals of both the singles and mixed doubles.

GARIOCH CLINCH SECOND TITLE
Newcomers to the Aberdeen Leagues this season, Garioch clinched their second title, courtesy of a 9-0 walkover against Meadows. This sees the Inverurie club finish their programme in Division Three of the Mixed League undefeated. Their closest rivals Beacon finished their programme with a 6-3 home win over bottom club, Grampian Police and a 9-0 walkover against Ellon club, Meadows.
Fetteresso maintained their position at the top of Division One of the Mixed League, with a 7-2 home win over Fraserburgh. The final outcome of this Division is still unclear, however, due to the large number of matches still outstanding.
CAS ensured that they finished second in Division One of the Gents League with two 9-0 wins over Summerhill. This condemed Summerhill to bottom spot and suffer the same fate as their mixed team in being relegated from the top flight of the Leagues. Racquets outstanding match against Fetteresso was declared null and void.
In Division Two of the Gents League the title is already decided with Fraserburgh crowned champions. Nothing to play for, however, counted for nothing in the remaining fixture in that Division between Fetteresso B and Westhill. These two teams fought out a fiercely contested match, which saw Westill's pairing of Grant Scott and Malcolm Campbell win the deciding rubber to win the match by 5 rubbers to 4. The match otherwise finished level on games and points. In the same Division the match Fraserburgh Vs Fetteresso B was declared null and void.
Grampian Police put the icing on their cake in Division Three of the Gents League with a 9-0 over the luckless 71 Club, confirming their status as the top team in that Division. 71 Club's Alan Duthie recently sufferred the dreaded achilles tendon badminton injury. Best wishes go to him for a speedy recovery.
In the last remaining fixture in Division Four of the Gents League champions, Garioch recorded a 9-0 walk over against University B.
No matches were played in the Ladies League, however the fixtures Fetteresso Vs Garioch and Banchory Vs Cults have been declared null and void.
