UNISON is Britain's biggest union, representing almost 1.3 million people working in the UK's public services. We negotiate for better pay and conditions, help individuals in trouble and campaign for a safer, fairer society.

UNISON Manchester represents well over 11,000 employees in Manchester City Council; from housing officers to teaching assistants, caretakers to library staff, environmental health officers to social and support workers. The Branch also represent members in the voluntary and private sector who provide services to the public.

Latest News: UNISON Members Accept Pay Offer

UNISON, the union representing 850,000 local government workers, has today voted to accept a three year pay deal worth 8.9% following widespread consultation with branches and regions.

Heather Wakefield, UNISON Head of Local Government said:

"Members have voted to accept the 3 year pay offer and we will now be concentrating our efforts on improving pay and conditions in other ways.

"We will have a major push on achieving equal pay through pay and grading reviews across local government. It's shameful that, although the Local Government Pay Commission said equality in local government is a necessity, not an option, we still have an enormous gender pay gap across the sector.

We need to ensure that that the pay and grading reviews are fully funded and implemented without further delay.

"We will also be tackling discrimination against part-time and term time workers and looking at ways to break down gender segregation in the workforce.

"And last, but by no means least ,we want to see a real commitment from the employers to improve training and provide training plans and skills pathways for all staff. Council training budgets are relatively low and over the years have become a target for cuts. UNISON wants to see greater investment in training and development, which we believe will go a long way towards easing the major recruitment crisis, as well as raising the standard services to the public."
