Known variants of the name COWELL are COWEL,COWL,COEL,COELL,COAL

Although COWELL is not a particularly common name there seems to be a number of unconnected families within Essex. This is not a one name study and concentrates on the COWELL's who appear to have originated in Thaxted. The research began because of my inability to find the baptism of Emma COWELL, my wife's great, great grandmother.

As I was unable to find her baptism I extracted all the Cowell references from the following Thaxted sources and attempted to construct familty trees in order to make sense of the information and to establish if Emma was a name which appeared in a particular family group.

In the 1841census for Thaxted there are ten COWELL family groups and two separate individuals and as can be seen six of the family groups and the two separate individuals have the same common relative.
