SUN News for UNISON Members @ SBC - Dec 2003

Winner of the 'Name This Newsletter' Competition
John Gunn (Branch Chair)  presents Trish Culshaw (Steward for Supported Housing North Team) with £25 in vouchers for the North Team's suggestion of the SUN. The team decided on Mothercare vouchers for Beth Mitchell.

Winning Bean Counter at the Regional Organising Fair
Beans Amanda Parks can't stay still for laughing as she presents John Gunn with the 'guess the number of jellybeans' prize at the Regional Organising Fair in Guildford on 24th November.

Yes, it's true, although some of us suspected it all along, John Gunn is an expert bean counter. In the next reorganisation you might expect him to join Mike Suarez and the rest of the SBC bean counting team.

John Gunn ran a stall on Safety.
Tony House ran a stall about Labour affiliation.
Andrew Gosling ran a stall on electronic publishing.
Linda Richards also attended the event.

Appeals and Tribunals

Problems in The Office?

Are you a David Brent? Do you work for a David Brent? Do you have a David Brent working for you?

Lots of problems which are left to fester will end up as disciplinaries, appeals, dismissals, appeals, and the Employment Tribunal. SBC has far too many active 'cases', and way beyond what you would expect for its size.

Nip problems in the bud!

If you can see a problem looming on the horizon, talk to your Steward or a Branch Officer.

If you are not a UNISON member, then join up now!

Fire Alarms with Welly - Boot out bad practice
UNISON has made representations about the number of false alarms and the ear-splitting qualities at Wellington House. The responsibility resides with the Queensmere landlord. The council only leases floors in the building is powerless to act.

UNISON recommends making every false alarm a full practice so that all people are moving in the same direction on the stairs and actually clear the building. It is the duty of every member to evacuate the building, and a disciplinary matter not to do so.

You are also putting your warden at risk if you refuse to leave the building when the alarm is ringing.

If the Queensmere staff say go back, ignore them. If those at the bottom of the stairs go back up as masses are still coming down, there is a disaster waiting to happen.

Only re-enter the building when Peter Satterthwaite or deputy says it is safe to do so.

SCHOOL SUPPORT STAFF

Profile of Tony House,
Branch Secretary

As you may know many changes are being made to school support staff pay and working conditions.  These are primarily from the government but also from Slough Borough Council.  I hope that all staff have received a copy of the booklet 'Pay and Grading proposals for school support staff'.  It has not yet been agreed by UNISON who will be giving their thoughts on the document. There has been no discussion with UNISON on Site Controllers or Caretakers roles and responsibilities.  Please read the document and if you have any comments or need further information regarding the major changes that are happening to your pay and working conditions, contact Linda Richards, Assistant Branch Secretary on 523699.
A big fish in our organisation. Tony likes nothing better than to go fishing himself. Now the UNISON Office is tided, anyone can have success in... wait for it...
