Liaising with the Welfare Officer
to ensure maximum take up of benefits to members

Liaising with departmental stewards
to ensure that they are up to date on membership benefits and that they
promote them effectively in the workplace

Branch
Education Officer
-
To establish contact with the
Regional Education Officer I Regional Education Committee
-
To make sure that all new stewards
and safety representatives receive initial information about their duties
and the branch structure is available, e.g. stewards handbook, rulebook,
service conditions etc.

To make sure someone in the branch
gives new stewards and safety representatives some initial guidance about
their duties preferably by means of a branch organised briefing session
-
To publicise the range of educational
and training opportunities available to members and activists
-
To get untrained stewards, safety
representatives and branch officers onto appropriate introductory training
courses
-
To encourage all UNISON
representatives to undertake further training which would help them with
their duties
-
To encourage branch members and
activists to make use of the UNISON Open College courses, especially
"Return to Learn" and "Women Work and Society"
-
If the branch was to run its own
introductory courses for stewards or safety representatives or discussion
meetings to organise these events
-
To keep a record of what training
has been undertaken and by whom in the branch
-
To keep the branch committee informed
of your activities and get approval where necessary

To establish a training plan for
activists and produce an annual budget to meet its costs

To make sure activists get paid
time off for training where appropriate

The main tasks for this post
include:

To promote UNISON's benefits
and services and explain how members get access to them

and Regional campaigns

To create a positive image for
the branch amongst members, potential members and the public. This would
be done by producing newsletters or bulletins to branch members

Helping to ensure that the branch
makes effective contact with the media whenever necessary by

Creating and maintaining a mailing
list to media outlets and contacts
-
Writing press releases
-
Ensuring that appropriate individuals
within the branch are available for comments interviews etc
-
Writing letters to the editor
Regional and Local papers
should be monitored for stories which effect the branch members and the
appropriate action taken, i.e. to provide a suitable argument in reply

The main tasks for
this post include:

UNISON
Steward
The role of a steward in UNISON
is vital to the success of UNISON. Stewards can expect maximum support
and assistance to carry out their duties effectively.
The key responsibilities for
a steward include:

To represent the interests of
members in their workplace in any grievance, dispute or workplace negotiations
-
To establish and maintain Union
organisation in the workplace and convene workplace meetings
-
To attend the monthly meetings
of the Branch Executive and meetings of the membership
-
To report to the Branch Executive
all developments affecting members in the their work group or place of
work
-
To carry out their duties in accordance
with the Union's handbook for stewards
To carry out this role effectively,
stewards will need to attend the monthly Branch Executive meeting for which
paid time off is given. S/he must also be committed to attend any relevant
training programs which will help him/her carry out their duties more effectively.
