Health and Safety

Safety reps wanted
One area of our working environment where UNISON has a very important role is health and safety. The University has a Safety Code which incorporates strict legal obligations and requirements to uphold and maintain a safe working environment.  The University and UNISON  are keen to promote health and safety and to avoid any circumstances or practices which could cause accident, injury or litigation.   UNISON has a vital role which is welcomed by the University to ensure that safety matters are brought to the attention of Safety Managers, the Safety Committees and University Safety Officer.  The University of Plymouth Branch of UNISON wants to involve more members in becoming safety reps. for their own area, floor, building, school.   All it will mean is having a local person able to report safety issues to their union Faculty Safety Rep. or Branch Health and Safety Officer. Of course, anyone can report health and safety matters to their Safety Manager or University Safety Officer, but UNISON has representation on the University Safety Committees and can enforce action at the highest level.   You can help to increase health and safety awareness and improve our working environment.
If you are interested in becoming a local health and safety rep., contact your Branch Executive

Safer with UNISON
Statistics show that unionised work places are safer than non-union ones. Full union involvement in health and safety cuts the number of injuries by more than half.

UNISON publishes  brief guides to health and safety issues from RSI to bullying. Details can be obtained from the UNISON health and safety unit's web site: UNISON Health and Safety
