FOCUS ON HARASSMENT

The University of Plymouth says, "If you are being harassed, the University will support you and safeguard your interests." (University Code on Harassment).

But what is harassment, and what happens if it happens to you, what should you do, who should you turn to?

Harassment is an issue for UNISON. While employers have a duty to ensure that workplaces are free from harassment, UNISON has a responsibility to work to make sure that employers fulfil that duty. UNISON's commitment to tackling harassment is enshrined in our rule book and constitutes a contract between the individual member and the union. This means that when harassment occurs our policy is challenged.

The University's Code on Harassment defines it as, Unacceptable behaviour which subjects an individual or group to unwelcome attention, intimidation, humiliation or ridicule and may include:

  • the invasion of personal space
  • suggestive behaviour
  • displaying offensive material
  • compromising sexual invitations or demands
  • derogatory or suggestive remarks, shouting or other verbal abuse regarding, e.g., disability, sexual orientation or ethnic origin
  • written abuse including graffiti
  • abuse including graffiti transmitted by electronic mail or other electronic media
  • unnecessary or unwanted physical contact, assault or other physical abuse
  • bullying, i.e. behaviour or language which is threatening, offensive or causes fear or distress to others
  • abuse of power
  • incitement of others to commit harassment
  • UNISON's definition of harassment goes further. We include any conduct, intentional or not, which is offensive or oppressive. Abuses of power including bullying (offensive, intimidating, malicious, insulting or humiliating behaviour, abuse of power or authority which attempts to undermine an individual or group of employees and which may cause them to suffer stress), undermining of confidence, authority or position from any member of staff or student is considered harassment by UNISON.

If you think you are being harassed, do not feel you have to tolerate it or that it is your fault. UNISON can immediately help with advice and support. We will begin informally, sensitively and discreetly by trying to resolve the problem with the least amount of fuss. If this fails or if the misconduct is too serious to be dealt with informally, we can discuss other options such as written approaches or more formal procedures following established guidelines. It is important that you feel in control and UNISON will respect your wishes and concerns and offer whatever level of support you need or is appropriate.

UNISON will ensure that the University follows the correct procedures within their policy on harassment and their legal responsibilities. UNISON will ensure that your rights are upheld and defended and that you are kept informed at all times. UNISON will also provide aftercare support, monitoring the situation making sure the results are effective.

If you are subjected to harassment, speak to any University of Plymouth UNISON Branch representative, they will be pleased to help.

But remember, YOU DO NOT HAVE TO PUT UP WITH ANY FORM OF HARASSMENT.
