December 3rd 2001, We received notification that we have been successful in our application for the Government's Charter Mark. On 26th February a group of staff will attend the presentation ceremony in London. It has been hard work, but worthwhile.
Ward 26 is a 5 bedded Intensive Care Unit in a District General Hospital - We have the facilities to cater for a 6th patient from time to time. We provide intensive care for patients from the Airdrie, Coatbridge, Cumbernauld and Kilsyth catchment areas: covering an area of 47,358 Hectares and a population of 326,000 people. Patients are admitted from the various Surgical and Medical Specialties found within the hospital. We also provide intensive care to any patient from the Lanarkshire Health Board area who require renal replacement therapy. We also accept patients from out-with our catchment area when Intensive care beds are unavailable at the host hospital. Ward 26 is in the Ground Floor of the West Tower (Surgical) of Monklands District General Hospital. The Hospital is currently developing plans to create a combined Intensive Care/High Dependency Unit within the Hospital. This will increase the complement of ICU and HDU beds within the hospital - and bring both existing units into one site. This is an exciting development for Monklands Hospital and for all staff involved.

About the Author Lanarkshire born and bred, born in the William Smellie Memorial Maternity Hospital in Lanark. Raised in the village of Allanton, near Shotts, I was educated at Allanton Primary School and Calderhead High School, Shotts. After leaving school I trained as a Psychiatric Nurse (RMN) at Hartwood Hospital, Shotts, and worked in the Psychiatric Intensive Care/Forensic Services Unit. I then moved to Epsom in Surrey to train as a General Nurse (RGN) at Epsom General Hospital, and came back to Scotland when I qualified. Apart from a short period working in the Brain Injury Rehabilitation Unit at Murdostoun Castle, Newmains, I worked almost continuously in Ward 26 until July 2002. During that time I also undertook a Degree at the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow, BA Arts & Social Sciences - I studied Politics & Russian. As of 29th July 2002 I will be working with NHS24 at their Contact Centre in Clydebank as a G Grade Nurse Advisor. I will continue to maintain the web-site for Ward 26, because it will allow me to maintain contact with what was an excellent place to work, and with the superb calibre of people that work there. |
