 The Trade Union

UNISON is the largest trade union in Britain with about 1.3 million members. UNISON organises workers in Local Government, the Health Service, Higher Education, the Voluntary Sector, Energy and Private Companies. In each of these areas UNISON plays a leading role in negotiations on pay, employment and working conditions at local, regional and national level. UNISON is run and controlled by its members, with all officials within the Branch being subject to annual election.

The Branch

With 2,600 members, the Southampton District Branch of UNISON is one of the largest Trade Union Branches in Southampton. The majority of Branch members are employed by Southampton City Council. The Branch also has members employed at Southampton Institute, Southampton City College, City Bus, local Housing Associations and a wide range of Voluntary Organisations. The Branch currently has over 145 Officials, Stewards and Health and Safety Representatives in workplaces across the City.

Branch Office

UNISON occupies three self-contained offices in the basement of the Civic Centre in Southampton. In the Office are two administrative workers employed directly by the Branch and three City Council employees released from their normal work in order to carry out trade union duties. In overall charge is the Branch Secretary, who is responsible for the running of the Branch.

The Branch Office is open to members from 9.00 a.m. to 5.00 p.m. Monday to Thursday and 9.00 a.m. - 4.00 p.m. on Friday.
