Note for: Francis Speakman SMITH, abt 1806 - 11 AUG 1862 Index
FRANCIS SPEAKMAN SMITH
19/05/1806 - 11/08/1862
Francis was baptised on 19 May 1806 at Great Leighs Parish Curch, he was
the son of John and Ann Martha Smith (nee Speakman).
According to the proven will, in 1813, of William Speakman, Farmer of
Terling, he had a brother called Francis who had a niece named Anne
Martha.
It would seem that Anne Martha was married to John Smith and there is a
record of such a marriage at Boreham in 1799, and it may be that her father
Francis Speakman died in Great Leighs in 1814.
There are no Great Leighs parish records at the Essex Record Office as these
are still held at Great Leighs.
I have looked at the 1841 Great Leigh census (HO 107/325/20) but there is no
mention of a John and Anne Martha Smith. However there is another part of
the parish on census reel 19 which I have not yet examined.
In 1828 a Francis Speakman Smith married a Susannah Cornell, and Susannah
Speakman Smith was born about 1828/29. Therefore it is very appealing to
think that John and Martha had a son called Francis Speakman after his
mother's Father.
The following is an extract from a letter received from Dr Mann in August
1996.
I have made a little progress in tracking down Francis
Speakman SMITH.
First I searched for his death at St Catharine's House
working forward from 1848, the date of his daughter's
marriage, since he was not noted as deceased at this
time. I found his death in 1862, and enclose a photocopy
of the certificate.
Unfortunately he died in a hospital so this did not give
me an address for the census However the surprise was
his occupation as customs officer. I have since checked
the customs records at Kew and found his enrolment in the
service on 25 Sep l851. The document included his
signature in a good hand, but he signed himself only
Francis Smith.
I also found a notice of his appointment as one of two
gatekeepers to the two gates of the Victoria Docks in
London. The post of gatekeeper appeared to be a new one
at the time:
19 Feb 1858
F.S.Smith and J.Wishart, Tidewaiters of the First class
appointed to take charge of the Gates of the Victoria
London Docks which are open from 6 am to 8 pm in summer
and from 7 am to 6 pm in winter. Also that Smith and
Wishart may be relieved every Sunday by two officers to
be sent from London by the first train which usual by
arrives at the Victoria Docks about 9 oclock in the
morning.
Working these long hours, perhaps it is not surprising
that he died within 5 years. His death was noted in the
records and allowed a promotion in the ranks of
tidewaiters, down to the fifth class. I found that
gatekeepers in 1859 were paid 68 per annum.
I did not find any record of his address, but presumably
he lived either at the gatehouse or within reach of it.
The Victoria docks were rather a long way out and my 1844
map shows very little building in the neighbourhood. If
not too time-consuming, I shall make a search of the
Victoria dock area in the 1861 census next trip to
London.
In 1848 Susannah was living in London and therefore it is possible that in 1841 she was still living in
Essex when she would be about 13. In the part of the 1841 census there is a Susannah of the right age
living with Joseph and Mary Smith, but in 1851 she is still at Great Leighs living with Joseph Smith.
There is no mention of a marriage of Anne Martha Speakman in Boyds and no trace of their marriage
in Terling; so where did they marry.
If Francis was born in 1806 he should be married circa 1827 and therefore Susannah could well be his
first born.
