A SMITH Family

of LEISTON Suffolk

This SMITH family is on my maternal side.It is not known where the family originated from but the first proved baptism is that of Robert SMITH who was baptised in Heveningham, but the family moved on via Walpole to end up in Leiston in about 1806.

Only the direct SMITH line has been traced because it is difficult to prove the SMITH name, especially as Leiston was a thriving town in the 19C with the Garrett Engineering Works as a major employer and which attracted a lot of "incomers" to the town
