My Doom Virus

The entire Internet is inundated by a cataclysm of mass E-mails triggered by the MyDoom.B virus

Hackers unleashed an agile worm -- using a sneaky, fairly new tactic to get unsuspecting computer users to diffuse their malicious code

W32/Mydoom@MM W32/

MyDoom-A is a worm which spreads by email. When the infected attachment is launched, the worm harvests email addresses from address books and from files with the following extensions: wab, txt, htm, sht, php, asp, dbx, tbb, adb and pl. W32/MyDoom-A creates a file called Message in the temp folder and runs Notepad to display the contents, which displays random characters. W32/MyDoom-A uses randomly chosen email addresses in the "To:" and "From:" fields as well as a randomly chosen subject line. The emails distributing this worm have the following characteristics.

"My Doom-A" mails itself out to other computers by forging the addresses of the "From" lines of e-mails. It looks through the computer for 'To' and 'From' addresses and then mails itself out.

If you get an email with an attachment, be postive about what it is before you open it. The 'My Doom' virus has several different subject lines and all of the emails ask you to open the attachment. Do Not open the attachment! Delete it, you can always email a known person to see if they were sending you a legitimate file and have them resend it if there is any doubt about the attachment

While the virus may arrive from a known address, you can identify the attachment by one of its extensions: .

  • pif .
  • scr .
  • exe .
  • cmd
  • .bat .
  • zip

My Doom can also be spotted through its subject lines and messages which could be a combination of these:

  • Subject
  • Test
  • Hi
  • Hello Mail Delivery System
  • Mail Transaction Failed
  • Server Report
  • Status Error

Message

  • Mail transaction failed.
  • Partial message is available.
  • The message contains Unicode characters and has been sent as a binary attachment.
  • The message cannot be represented in 7-bit ASCII encoding and has been sent as a binary attachment.

Microsoft announced that it will offer $250,000 for information leading to the capture and conviction of the individual or group responsible for the release of MyDoom.B

The MyDoom e-mail virus is only a few days old and still growing, but at least one security firm is ready to crown it as the worst ever.
