MANUAL HANDLING The Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992 (revised 1999) are often thought to cover only lifting. They actually relate to all the following:-
•Lifting and lowering •Pushing and pulling •Twisting •Carrying •Multi-person operations •Working in awkward positions
Employers are required to assess the work and tasks being done, and to avoid manual handling operations that involve a risk of injury.
Staff should also therefore be trained in manual handling procedures i.e. how not to lift etc.
