Annual Report 2002
JOIN THE UNISON CAMPAIGN TO DEFEND SERVICES! Every Privatisation of Public Services in Britain has led to:
•Deterioration of quality of services •Increased costs to the consumer •Job cuts •Cuts to employment rights and conditions
Plymouth is planning the Privatisation of:
•The Direct Services Department •Housing •Schools •Leisure Services, Pools & Libraries •Plymouth City Centre •Computer Services (ISD) •Legal Services •Finance
What has the union done? 1.Introduction: City Of Plymouth UNISON is the most prominent, visible and active trade union in Plymouth. We rely wholly on volunteer Stewards to provide a wide range of services for the benefit of our members, and to influence negotiations on employment rights and policy on public services to protect all our futures. In 2002 we won significant pay increases for the low paid, with active campaigns including strike action and demonstrations. Through hard negotiation we have defended existing employment rights when employers have sought to withdraw entitlements, and we have represented over 400 members individually.
Granby Wins! It took an Appeal to the High Court to ensure Plymouth Council reconsidered the closure of Granby Way Residential Home for Older People. UNISON had worked closely with the residents' solicitors to put forward a case. Now, after a thorough review, Granby residents can stay in their Home for the rest of their lives.
