6.2 Creating user accounts (10.2 server) |

Creating individual users with the "Server Admin" tool is pretty straightforward. However it could become tedious if you have a large number of accounts to create. In this situation, consider using a shell script (as described in the section "6.3 Shell Script - Creating User Accounts") to import your users from a comma delimited text file. |

Log on to the server as "root". |
|
|
Launch "Workgroup Manager" from the toolbar. |
|
| In the "Workgroup Manager Connect" window, enter the server IP address, the "administrators" name, and the "administrators" password. | |
|
Select "/NetInfo/root" from the pull down menu at the bottom of the Workgroup Manager screen. Records defined in this context are available to network users. |

| Click on the lock icon... | |
|
You will be asked to authenticate. Enter root's name and password. |
|
|
Click on the "Accounts" icon from the top-left of the screen. |

Click on the Users tab. This shows currently defined users. |

Click on the "New Record" icon in the top-right of the screen. |

In the "Basic" tab for the new user record, enter the users "Short Name", "Name" and "Password". "User ID" is automatically filled in - though you can change this if you wish. |

Click on the "Groups" tab for the user record. The group details for the primary group will be automatically filled in with the details of the group "Staff". Change these details to those of the one of the groups you defined earlier. |

Click on the "Home" tab for the user record. Tick the "Advanced" button - this allows you to specify "Home Directory" properties in more detail.. Enter the URL of a share point in the "Server/Share Point URL" field. Enter a path to the user directory (relative to the share point) in the "Path" field. Enter the file system path to the user home in the "Home" Field. When you are done, click on the "Save" button. |

| Now, switch to the Finder and open the SharePoint folder where you want to store the user home. | |

Open a group folder and create a new folder. Rename this new folder to the users short name. Note, placing user homes within a group folder allows you to administer these directories more easily. In the example opposite, the home directory for the new user has been placed within a folder called "baph2003". This folder contains user homes for all BA Photography students who graduate in the year 2003. As an administrator, I know that in Summer 2003 these user homes can be deleted. |

| Open the new user folder, and create a new folder within it called "Documents" | |

Switch back to "Workgroup Manager" and click on the "Sharing" icon from the top-left of the screen. |

Click on the "All" tab. |
|
|
Browse to the home folder. |
|
|
Set the permissions on the user home folder. Set the "Owner" to the user that you just created with read/write access. Set the "Group" to "wheel" with read/write access Give "Everyone" read access Click on the "Save" button to make changes. |

Now with the "Sharing" panels still active, browse to the home folder's"Documents" folder. |
|
|
Finally, set the permissions on the "Documents" folder. Set the "Owner" to the user that you just created with read/write access. Set the "Group" to "wheel" with read/write access Give "Everyone" NO access Click on the "Save" button to make changes. |
