5.2 Creating user groups (10.2 server) |
Grouping users together allows you to organise user files and restrict user access logically - and so simplifies some administrative procedures. The following describes creating user groups. |
Log on to the server as "root". |
| Launch "Workgroup Manager" from the toolbar. | |
| In the "Workgroup Manager Connect" window, enter the server IP address, the "administrators" name, and the "administrators" password. | |
Select "/NetInfo/root" from the pull down menu at the bottom of the Workgroup Manager screen. Records defined in this context are available to network users. |
| Click on the lock icon... | |
You will be asked to authenticate. Enter root's name and password. |
| Click on the "Accounts" icon from the top-left of the screen. | ![]() |
Click on the Groups tab. This shows currently defined groups. |
![]() |
Click on the "New Record" icon in the top-right of the screen. |
![]() |
| In the "Members" tab on the right hand panel, enter
a real name and short name for the group.
The Group ID will be filled in automatically - though you can change this if you like. |
Click on the "Volumes" tab in the right hand panel. Enter the details of where your group folder is stored. For example, selecting the "Advanced" option allows you to enter the "URL" of a share point and the "Path" to the group folder. You are also able to define a user to administer the folder in the "Owner Name" field. |
Click on "Save" to make changes. Notice that the new group appears in the group list. |
| Now, switch to the Finder and create the group folder within one of your SharePoints. | |
Switch back to "Workgroup Manager" and click on the "Sharing" icon from the top-left of the screen. |
Click on the "All" tab. |
| Browse to the folder that you just created to select it. | |
Now, set the privileges on the folder. Set the "Owner" to the group owner name that you decided upon earlier. Set the "Group" to "wheel" with read/write access Give "Everyone" read access Click on the "Save" button to make changes. |
| Repeat the process for other groups that are required. | |
