4.2 Creating a new share point (10.2 server)

A share point is any folder on the server whose contents you would like shared between different users on the network. Share points are generally available from the "Go" menu in Mac OS X, and from the "Chooser" in Mac OS 9 and earlier.

The following describes creating a new network share-point...

Log on to the server as "root".

Create a new folder for the share point on your main storage volume.

Launch "Workgroup Manager" from the toolbar.
In the "Workgroup Manager Connect" window, enter the server IP address, the "administrators" name, and the "administrators" password.
Select "/NetInfo/root" from the pull down menu at the bottom of the Workgroup Manager screen. Records defined in this context are available to network users.
Click on the lock icon...

You will be asked to authenticate.

Enter root's name and password.

Click on the "Sharing" icon from the top-left of the screen.

Click on the "SharePoints" tab.

This shows currently defined sharepoints.

Now, browse for the folder that you wish to share...

Click on the "All" tab.

Browse to the folder, and select it such that it i highlighted.

Click on "Share this item and it's contents" from the General tab in the right hand panel.

A warning will be displayed. Click OK.

Permissions for the share point depends on your individual requirements - however, the following is a good starting point...

Set the "Owner" to the name of your server administrator with read/write access

Set the "Group" to "wheel" with read access

Give "Everyone" read access

Click the "Save" button to make the changes.

Click on the "SharePoints" tab in the panel on the left.

Notice that the new share point has appeared in the list.

Click on the protocol tab and enable or disable options as necessary.

You may also want to set the share point to automount as described in the section "4.4 Enabling the automounting of SharePoints".

"Auto-mount" transparently mounts a share-point as part of the OS X clients' file system during user log in (Usually in /Network/Servers). This allows users to access files from another machine without being presented with a log-in window.

Repeat the process for every other share-point that will be shared from the server.
