(13.10.04) MCL members’ meeting: Our last meeting was held in Bristol on Saturday, 13th November 2004. A report will be available here soon.

(24.05.04 – updated 17.07.04) Notes from MCL’s Annual General Meeting, LONDON, 15th May 2004:

MCL's secretary, Peter Kempadoo, sent a letter expressing his apologies for being unable to attend the meeting or to continue as secretary due to pressure of other work. Peter confirmed that no business was outstanding. The meeting asked for their thanks to be conveyed to Peter for the work he had undertaken on behalf of MCL.

Ireene-Sointu offered to act as contact for MCL and to deal with routine correspondence. Others would assist as required.

There were no questions about the annual financial report.

MCL’s booklets will be reviewed starting next year. Thanks were expressed to Veggies for their invaluable work in keeping the stocks of MCL publications, sending out orders and taking materials to all the events they attended.

Elaine Garrett advised that she had started the review of leaflets as agreed at the last meeting in November. Efforts had been made to use plenty of material from Kathleen's original leaflets, whilst updating the factual content where necessary.

Bronwen Lee advised that there are now 36 addresses on the contacts list.

A report from the Vegan-Organic Trust was circulated to those present – this gave assurances that the proposed centre would express the vegan message clearly. The meeting agreed that the grant to VOT from MCL could be rolled forward, on the same terms as before, for a further two-year period without any need to add any additional clauses. It was agreed, however, that the report from VOT should be appended to the agreement.

The list of events Veggies will attend will be included in New Leaves, with a request for help to run a table. Veggies always take MCL stock wherever they go.

Patrick Smith mentioned the European Social Forum, which had grown out of the World Social Forum and anti-globalisation movement. The WSF had taken place in Mumbai in January and had attracted over 100,000 visitors. The WSF has emerged as a global and grassroots alternative to the G8 - its theme is "another world is possible". Business at the social forums is conducted through reaching consensus. The ESF will take place around Alexandra Palace, London, in October this year and has indicated it would welcome input from groups representing compassionate lifestyles. It was agreed this would be an excellent opportunity for MCL to spread its message. Many parallel sessions take place that give a great opportunity for grass roots involvement.  Groups can suggest topics for debate via the website and like-minded groups get linked together. For more information the website is http://www.mobilise.org.uk/view/ESF/WebHome (see also the July edition of New Leaves).

Graham Burnett advised that he is featured as a vegan-organic gardener in this new book coming out in June – Allotment Folk.

It was agreed to keep the frequency of meetings to 6-monthly at the moment, with the next meeting taking place in Bristol on Saturday, 13th November (details will be provided later).

Thanks to all who attended and all who contributed to the meeting.

(15.04.03) Kathleen Jannaway, co-founder (with her husband Jack) of the Movement for Compassionate Living, passed away peacefully on 27th January 2003. Click here for our biographical tribute and photographs.
