Shetland Dragons Skate Hockey

Match Report Saturday 12th January 2002

Two matches were played at last Saturdays skate hockey session, one for Pee Wee's (under 13's) and one for Juniors (Under 18's), several of the more experienced Pee Wee's played in the Junior match to make up the numbers, and the two first choice goal keepers played in both games.

The standard of play in the Pee Wee game was much improved over previous weeks with players looking for space to spread the game. Amy Harper was the dominant player for the Blues and came close to scoring on a number of occasions. The best chance of the first half came when Amy collected a loose ball behind the Red goal and played a pass back to Stuart Sineath who shot just wide of the left post. Despite good interplay between Magnus Johnson, Danny Mullay and John McNeil the Reds were unable to put any pressure on the Blue goal and the match ended in a 0 - 0 draw. The Most Valuable Player in this game was Amy Harper.

The Junior game was evenly contested right from the start. Ben Davis for Whites looked a little rusty after an extended Christmas layoff and missed a couple of early chances. Ruairidh Mackenzie on the other hand was as sharp as ever and he opened the scoring for Blacks, taking a pass from Christopher Storey and moving quickly across the pitch to squeeze the ball low into the right corner. This seemed to fire up Ben who scored the next two goals, both from Magnus Laurenson passes. Magnus took the ball down the left side, drawing in two defenders before sending a pass across the face of the goal where Ben slotted the ball home, the second was almost identical but this time down the right hand side.

The score was brought level when Emily Garrick broke down the right wing and played a fine centring pass which Ruairidh redirected into the White goal. Andy Harper quickly restored Whites lead getting the final touch in a scrum of players in the Black crease. This could have been the end of it however some sloppy defending by Guy Smith, who was covering a player who had to leave early, allowed Antony Okill to take the ball at halfway and score the last goal in a thrilling 3 - 3 draw. MVP was Magnus Laurenson.

Next game is at the Clickimin Centre on Saturday at 11:45am.
