Shetland Dragons Skate Hockey

Match Report Saturday 8th December 2001

The last Shetland Dragons game before Christmas took was a two team match at the Clickimin on Saturday. The game was played over two 20 minute periods and each team was made up of 10 players, a goalie, 5 peewee's (under 13) and 4 juniors.

The game started with the Black juniors on the attack, Emily Garrick feeding Magnus Laurenson down the right who's centering pass was tipped just wide by Kieran Smith. Emily and Magnus combined less than a minute later to produce the opening goal, Emily drew the defence to the left and a square pass at halfway gave Magnus the space to beat Jonathan Sandilands in the White goal.

Skate hockey is a physically demanding game so after the goal the entire shift of Black and White juniors were substituted and the peewee's came on. The change helped the White's who quickly developed some good movement between Joe O'Connor and Magnus Johnson. Several attacking plays by White were broken up by James Nicolson who appeared to be everywhere, eventually the preasure paid off and Joe managed to squeeze the ball through a mass of defenders and into the Black net. Once again the Black juniors dominated from the face off however Antony Okill and Christopher Storey maintained a solid White defence and there was no score in this shift. Joe O'Connor and Magnus Johnson took control of the next peewee shift and Magnus scored his first goal of the season when Steven Stove misshandled a shot and the rebound fell right in his path. Antony Okill scored for the Whites on the next junior shift from a Ben Davis pass and when Joe O'Connor scored his second and Whites fourth.

Black stopped the rot with a great shift from their juniors, goals by Magnus Laurenson from a Ruairidh Mackenzie pass and then Ruairidh got his name on the scoresheet with a break off a Kieran Smithh pass from halfway. Just before the interval the White attack put a series of great passes together which resulted in Ben Davis's second goal with assists going to Antony Okill and Andy Harper.

Halftime score Black 3 white 5.

Black started the second half strongly with two goals by Ruairidh Mackenzie, the first from a Magnus Laurenson pass from deep right the second a long breakaway from his own goalline.

Blacks elation was short lived as Joe O'Connor scored on his next shift, carrying the ball in from the right wing and beating the goalkeeper with a long shot to put the Whites ahead. James Nicolsons hard work eventually paid off with the first goal from the Black peewee's. Alec Watt won the ball on halfway and drove towards the left post drawing the defenders. A quick backhand pass found James in space which he used well to beat the goalkeeper.

It looked as if the game would end up in a draw but in the dying moments Ruairidh Mackenzie used his body to block a pass, controlled the ball and managed a low shot. The goalkeeper made a fine save but in the ensuing scamble Ruairidh managed to get the ball through a mass of bodies and into the net.

Final score Blacks 7 Whites 6.
