Notes
(1) (reserved)
(2) I commissioned the Waterford Research Survey to research the Todd family
in Waterford and the first part of the tree up to George's wedding to Maria
in Nottingham refelects this. The Todds were a Church of Ireland family and
may have settled from Scotland. More research is needed on this.
(3) I got hold of George and Maria Margaret TODD's wedding certificate in Nov
1994 with the help of the Notts Family History Society and to my amazement
they were married in Nottingham at the church which took over from the
Independent Chapel in Castle Gate, where the Rev BURTON first joined!
The certificate revealed details of their respective fathers.
The Archivist at the Customs and Excise Office first sent me an extract of a
record showing that in 1884 George Todd was the Excise Officer for Donington,
near Boston, Lincs. He entered the service in 1881 in Nottingham and was
probably moved about before taking up the 1884 job. An Excise Officer
exercised control over traders in an area that could be comfortably covered
in a day on horse back! The post was equivalent to today's Higher Executive
Officer, although the pay was relatively better!
George died on 11 Feb 1897 at Cobholm, Gt Yarnmouth from a wasting illness
associated with either lung cancer or TB. He was only 37. He was described as
a 'Superannuated Excise Officer' on the death certificate. Their address was
16 Stone road, Cobholm, Gt Yarnmouth.
George's career was traced through the year books. After Donington, he was
in Kings Lynn with his family by 1887 and stayed there until 1891. In 1892 he
was in Cottenham, Cambridge and by 1893 he was in Great Yarnmouth. He appeared
in a list of superannuated officers up to 1 Nov 1895 and was in an obituary of
superannuated officers, to 1 Nov 1897.
Just after I found Alex CHISHOLM's family in the censuses at Nottingham, I
searched the 1881 census for George, a year before he married Maria. I found
him at a lodging house with another colleague described as a Ride Officer
with the Inland Revenue, from Dublin. George was described as a '2nd class
Assistant, Inland Revenue.' His place of birth was given as Waterford, Ireland.
George's marriage certificate gave details of his father, James, and one
witness was a John J TODD (John James), who was his younger brother. The C
& E Archivist confirmed that George joined the Nottingham office of the
Excise Service in 1881 and that his post was a trainee one.
Record books are now at The Customs National Museum, Albert Dock, Liverpool L3 4AQ
where they can be inspected.
